Default Dyno results for all mods

I know many of us want to see dyno results when any mods are made to our Z's. I am creating this thread hoping that everytime you do any type of mod be it exhaust, ECU, CAM, or FI etc. that you post it here. This will prevent guessing which mod performs the best.

As they say...the buck stops here

I installed a GReddy Turbo sticker DIRECTLY on my intake and I can without a doubt state that this mod has increased at least 15 or 16 HP (as tested with the butt dyno).

Nevertheless, I plan on installing test pipes, Injen CAI, and a Crawford Plenum one week from this saturday.
I will be doing dyno runs after each mod. 4 Dyno runs total including 1 baseline.
Ill post the results as soon as I get them.

C'mon man he's being serious and I for one think he has a GREAT idea. A Dyno thread WOULD be a GREAT asset to this section of the forum.

Talking :)

Funny you mention that. I've been thinking and working on a bolt on mod chart for the 350Z for realistic dyno numbers with certain mods.

Its actually one of the first Project 350Z articles will be on power mods and what mods will make together and such. I don't think we'll hit the cams by the next issue but it should be interesting.

Since mods like intake (3hp) +exhaust (8hp) doesn' always mean it equals 11hp for example. It might go into the next issue of SportZ depending on the supercharger article and if we get these new products in time Wink wink to someone i know on the headers!!

Till then stay tuned!

Hmm, maybe this is kind of like you build your own Z ahead of time by selecting mods together and it gives you net hp?

This is a good concept, but there is a big flaw... different dynos will give different results.

Posting "Mod X & Mod Y produceds 250rwhp/235ftlbs" is pretty useless. Wouldn't it make more sense to list the mods in terms of actual gains? This makes more sense since people will typically go back to the same dyno machine after their mod(s) and what we really are interested in is the net gain.

So, maybe a post like...
  • Starting Config = Stock + Injen CAI + 19" wheels + Grounding Kit
  • New Config = Stock + ATI Procharger + 19" wheels + Grounding Kit + Borla TD Exhaust
  • Net rwhp difference = +112
  • Net rw torque difference = +67

... which would tell us that if we have a similar starting config, we could drop the Injen, add the ATI and Borla, and expect to gain something close to the figures provided on our HP and Torque numbers.

No prob... it helps us see how the car responds to mods.

My theory is that the VQ is tuned a little rich and basic bolt ons will level this out bumping it up to a maximum 20-25rwhp.

The next stage is cam and flywheel which are good for another 20.

This means that it's best to find the cheapest way to 20-25hp and after you get there, it's really not worth paying for additional bolt ons without a custom tuned ECU and/or cam.

IMO, if you dyno ~265rwhp (+/- 5) with an I/H/E, the plenum isn't worth it as it won't net much more. But if you're stock, it's more cost effective to just get the plenum + test pipes and you'll hit the cap for stage I.

So basically:

(Stock).............235-240rwhp

(Stage I) I/PL/H/TP/E .... 260rwhp

(Stage II) C/FLY............ 280-285rwhp

Stage I should max out at 260 with 2-3 of the listed, not all.

*UR Crank Pulley should add 5-7rwhp at any stage

Interesting theory.

Doesn't the plenum prevent the front two cylinders from running richer than the rest? Therefore, it seems to me that even if you add Intake, Headers, and Exhaust it seems like you would still be running the front two cylinders richer than the rest. Adding the plenum on top would still balance the airflow and help those front two cylinders.

I personally don't know if that's true, but it seems like if you never balance the air flow to the cylinders, you will never reach the full potential of the engine.

Does the crank pulley make anything, like air conditioning or any other electronics function all funky or mess anything up? Thx. Good post, but do we have any baseline dynos for those modded cars u posted ZXSaint? Thx again.

I agree with D'oh! Adding an intake or anything downstream from the plenum cannot correct the discrepancy in air flow to the 2 front cylinders. This is due to space limitation in the design of the stock plenum. If anything, the Crawford plenum would significantly enhance the total HP output.

Agreed. In the mentioned situation, I believe the plenum will balance out the HP curve at the top end but won't affect peak HP (by much).

I just installed the crank pulley this weekend. My short review:

At idle, AC is just as cold and battery meter is normal. However with highbeams on + AC + rolling down the windows, it drops close to 12vdc, a little lower than before... but this is still fine unless you're running a big audio system off it (where i'd recommend a cap for the amp). As far as performance gains, the first thing I noticed was that the the engine braking isn't as drastic in first gear. It rolls around in first without the "whining slowdowns". Revs slide up sooner, it almost seems easier to shift smoothly.

But man was it tough to get that crank bolt off.
