Default Transmission friction/drag

Last week, I had the Z up on jackstands. I started it with the transmission in neutral and let the clutch out when I got out the car. I was surprised to see the rear wheels turning since I was in neutral. They weren't turning slow either, they were spinning like I would expect them to do if the car was in gear at idle.

As background - 45K miles on the trans. Trans oil changed to Royal Purple back around 25K miles. No other problems with it such as grinding, etc. It IS hard to shift 1-2, 2-3 when extremely cold.

Is there really that much drag on the internals? Any other explanation?

I know where you're heading but read my post again. This is not the case of pressing the clutch in and having it not fully dis-engage, it's the opposite. The clutch was out, it was fully engaged and turning the flywheel and input shaft. I'm trying to figure out why the drive shaft was turning -- the car was in neutral, no gears.

The car had been sitting for a while. I had been doing a brake job on it so it probably hadn't driven in about 2 hours.

When you first start it (cold), there are several idle enrichments that keep it higher than normal and richer than normal. Otherwise, you will always see a small drop as you let out the clutch and a bounce in RPM when you depress it. You have the extra weight and load of the clutch and input shaft when it's engaged so that would slow the engine slightly.

Not sure how you can turn the rear wheels with the transmission in neutral. Common sense tells you that the transmission must NOT be in neutral.

That's why I'm asking. I KNOW that they shouldn't be turning.

Here's ya go ---

cold idle with clutch in 1500 rpm, clutch out 1400
hot idle with clutch in or out, 800.

I'd expect some drag when the trans is not up to operating temp but I'm surprised it's that much. I wonder if there's really that much drag to be able to turn the driveshaft.

My car (06 Track) doesn't have much take off from 1st. It's so hard to learn my clutch and gas pedal technique and I've had the car since Feb 28th.

Any advice?
