Default Would any of you all even attempt doing CAMS at home?

I am really interested in getting Tomei or NISMO cams but the install price is holding me back.

I'm pretty sure we have all the proper tools, if we don't we have access to many tools.

So, Would any of you all even attempt doing CAMS at home?

Thanks,
Victor

Yes. If you are even considering it you should probably just save your money and diy. Get a friend to help out if you're hesitant.

I know this is not a simple project so I wouldn't do it. Plus I get all my hook up from my cousin's shop.

They are not that hard to do. Just buy a shop manual and follow it step by step. the big thing is to make sure you have the timing set right. Did it on my 97 eclipe and will do it on this car when the time comes.

well .... i have done a few cam and valvtrain instals on hondas myself ........ and well .... i would asume that the instal are similar, being that while all engines are diffrent.. most run on the same basic idea...............

switching cams is butter .... valvetrain gets a little more involed....

only problem is, u can go and get a shop manual just fine ...... but what i have learned, is that there are always those few secrets to doing a job right that arent in the book ........ that come from trail and error ....... sooo ... maybee talk to a few shops ... dig for info .. and then make the decision!!!

i think the car has a timing chain, not belt, so it's gonna be harder than older hondas or nissans to realign everything again. not sure though, i've never openned the engine up.

After reading the service manual and talking to a tech at the dealership it sounds like it is going to be about the same labour to just drop the whole engine out to do the cams. Due to the space constraints I think it is a great idea to do the cams on the engine stand....then you can be certain that everything is lined up perfectly. While it is out I can port match the manifolds to the heads and have a port and polish/high performance valve grind done. If you are gonna put that amount of time into the cam install why not go the extra few hours and do it all.

I'd do it at home, but for the average guy, it's not something you want to try unless you've done something like this before, or you have a friend who's done it before (and you'd better trust that friend).

Absolutely!

Cams on this car is not a DIY job in your garage. Now I am not saying that it cant be done, but for the average, or even better than average shade tree mechanic; it may be too much.

The post above about engine drop / raise / removal is right on! It will not be an easy job. Of course there are some tricks the experienced can use to make it quicker. That is not me. That is for Doug and John.

For the record, one of Doug’s mechanics (protégé if you will) is the guy behind the scenes and does all of the 350Z work. He even does parts of the plenums. IMO there is no one better or has more 350Z experience in my neck of the woods (maybe anywhere) than John. John is the sole heir to my car's service. He has even fixed things that Nissan would/could not. So if you are in the area, Give Doug your business and let John work on your car.

It looks a lot harder to do on a Z than an eclipse. I just installed my crane #14 turbo cams in my eclipse last weekend in about 4 hours. I wouldn't even know where to start on the Z...

edit:
But to answer the question, Yes. Yes I would. But I would need to be sure I had another form of transportation for a few days, heh.
