Default Premature Clutch DEATH

OK - I bought the 2004 Roadster used with 27K on it. She is immaculate and has been bullet proof since. I have owned her for 3 years now and just flipped 44K (Chicago winters and a Harley). When I stabbed the gas the other morning I noticed the R's rise and fall back about 500 before she really started pulling. This is pretty consistent now. The smell of burning friction products is in the air when I park as well so it sounds like a clutch on it's way out to me. What do you guys think?
Have you ever heard of a clutch puking this early?
I admit that I like to drive the car but I don't do hole shots and never ride the clutch. Seems to me that either this is really shitty clutch life or the previous owner abused the clutch.

Couple O ?'s
How difficult is this tranny to R&R? (I've done Ford C3's and a Toyota Supra)
I certainly would not replace with a stock Nissan clutch. I don't race but would like a clucth that will hold up to a little heat.
Which manufacturer would you reccomend for after market clutch parts?

While that's a very well thought out reply it isn't very helpful!
The question remains, what after market clutch manufacturer would you suggest?

Sounds like typical clutch slipping. 44,000 miles is early, but, if its broken its broken.

Plenty of clutch-flywheel recommendations here. Read.

I 100% dont find that mileage early at all........however i track my car.......yet spirited driving will do it to the oem clutch at that mileage...

I find it funny when people complain about a clutch going out at any amount of mileage......its a wear and tear item and on a sports car the clutch should be just a maintenance/replacement milestone IMHO.....

definately the JWT clutch......./thread on that question!

the dealership went out of their way to tell me that when i purchased the extended service contract on mine. they consider it a wear and tear item not a warranty issue. besides, it's just an excuse to upgrade like OP said

I pulled my trans in a few hours last week. Took the flywheel to the machinist and then next day it took a few hours to install. We were working on a car lift. There really aren't many required tools that are odd tools. You'll need some long extensions to get the top 2 trans bolts out but other than that it was cake.

I used a competition clutch stage 4 (6 puck sprung). I don't recommend it for a daily driver unless you have tons of horsepower. I'm supercharged and needed hte extra strength. The pressure plate they offer with it i think is the same as the stage 3 which is a full faced clutch. The pedal feel is so much softer and nicer now compared to stock.

The full faced stage 3 clutch should work great for you. I would stick with the stock flywnheel unless you want to deal with the chatter nad stuff of the aluminum. For my drag purposes i didn't trust an aluminum flywheel. Too much heat from multiple drag runs back to back.

So you were able to have the stock flywheel resurfaced? I'm guessing I missed something and that you already have an after market flywheel with all the HP you are running.
The guy at JWT was telling me that they don't resurface the stock ones due to the design and that I would need the flywheel.

Engine dampener was aftermarket, meaning i added it... I no longer have it though..

I have a Nismo Flywheel, Clutch, and clutch cover.. It cost a pretty penny, could be cheaper nowadays....

I have a 03 with bolt ons (260whp) and i have a competition clutch stage 2 with an ACT prolite flywheel and i love my set up, it feels great very responsive and firm. I have beat the hell out of it on numerous occasions and it hasnt shown any sign of wear yet. The only downside is slight chatter in low rpms but its nothing major or intolerable. If you are doing the clutch get a lighter flywheel it makes a big difference in how the car drives.
