Yobri, I also broke my oil filter wrench last Friday while changing my oil! I needed a gigantic pipe wrench to get it off.

 

I think everyone has difficulty removing the filter the first time. Godzilla is paid very well to over-tighten the filter at the factory. I have one of the socket shaped filter wrench from Nissan which helps considerably.

gmoorjr: There are a wide variety of opinions on this topics, but several engine builders I talked with said that the lubed engine parts 'seat' themselves better if broken in with regular oil until 10K miles, and that's what I did also. Changed to Mobil 1 at 12K.

Does anyone else think that the plastic shield below the engine is mainly a marketing hype? I guess that it does keep dirt/water from splashing up into the engine bay, but for making certain that I have 'zero lift'...I don't drive that fast. I also changed my y-piple and muffler and don't have the flat surfaces which the oem had.

 

You would think the factory would read and DO what they write on the filter about putting a film of oil on the gasket. They put it on dry and then months later when we go to change it it's in love with the block and don't want to come loose. I have never had a new car that the 1st filter was not a PITA taking it off.

I used a latex glove stretched over the end with one of those overgrown oil filter sockets to get mine loose the first time.

 

I keep the skid plate to protect the engine, I dont really care much about the aerodynamics of it, as has been said, I dont go that fast.

I have taken that off before tho, I got a nice 10mm wrench that makes the job go quick.

looks like Ill be investing in a oil filter wrench, as I intended to do it by hand... sounds like that wont be happening.

I use the Mobil 1 M1-110 filter - it's the same diameter as the stock filter, but longer. More filter media than the M1-105.

The Nissan filter is a 9E000 filter, if you're interested, pretty much every Nissan made now or in the past ~3-4 years or so uses that filter. All you need to take off is the plug and the filter, the plastic piece that is over the filter's general area, on the passenger side of the engine is more like a flap, meant to just be pushed out of the way to get to the filter. It's the same way on all the other cars with VQ35's. Just drain the oil into a pan, rub some oil around the rubber seal of the filter, and hand tighten it, then give it another 2/3 turn with a wrench. Those socket style ones definatlly are awesome.

 

Okay, YOU HAVE TO take the dam plastic cover off to get the dam oil filter out. There is no other way. It took me 2 hours to change my oil today, LOL.

Anyway, heres my dilemma.

As I was trying to get the dam filter off, I had to hammer a screwdriver in the filter to get it to come off.

Well, in the process I chipped a piece of the round threaded thing that the filter goes onto. Not a big chip, very small.

Will that cause a problem? I am not leaking oil.

Experts, please advise? Thanks!

 

That's why I tapped it furthest away from the car (with the hammer) The outer section of the filter, because I initially contemplated what you did...

If you were able to successfully get the oil filter on, then I think that you are fine. Now if you had warped that area of the car, there might have been some costly problems in rectifying this...
