update:

The shop owner acknowledged that the noise is very unusual and pronouned, not what he thought he heard. But I heard it from the moment I test drove the car.

That was yesterday afternoon and he's going to open up the pumpkin this morning to see what's going on, which he suspects is a bearing, or two.

He was kind enough to offer replacement bearings (if needed), something I didn't have to ask for. I forgot to ask, but I'm hoping the crush sleeve, pinion nut, and oil seals would be replaced as well if they're going to open it up again.

Anyways, he's doing what the can to make it right but I'm still disappointed that it wasn't right the first time to minimize my downtime, rental car costs, wait for parts...etc.
