My 450Z Build thread - VH45DE Swap
#24
Definitely man!
So I just got off the phone with my buddy doing the swap; things are going SUPER smooth. From the looks of it, in the front end it's going to be the same difficulty as doing the swap to a Z32, only difference is the wiring is a lot cleaner and more organized. He's super excited because he's loving the swap and hoping to do more soon.
Got almost everything ordered and all we're waiting on is a final decision on whether to use the transmission adapter plate from some friends that make their own for their dedicated drift S13's and RX-7's with this swap, or to go for a Mazworx one that will take about a week or so longer to get and will cost $100 more. Either way, we're looking at getting the Z driveable by the end of next week. That's got me massively excited, so I'm going to get to work on comparing the two tranny adapter plates ASAP.
Super excited for how things are going, gonna try and head up to Austin this week to see whatsup! Also if anyone has any good color ideas for the valve colors / manifold lemme know! I'm kind of digging the electric blue valve covers idea and changing up my cars color scheme to white / blue wheels and seats, etc.. We'll see!

Will have updates/pics soon. Tranny adapter plate is done, bringing the tranny over here to San Antonio to get the adapter plate onto it and all that fun stuff. Planning on having the entire thing finished by next weekend, I'll have pictures / vids soon hopefully.
As far as the VQ35 6-speed bolting up to it.. Not really sure about that one. I'm pretty sure it would still need an adapter plate, I can try and find out though.
Just to cure any lust for pictures, here's a nice little two-picture update.
I went from my Z....
to this...
Stylin', am I right?!

I have a question for Z1 or any vet about the stock tranny and rear end. Does it make a difference that the cars that have high hp/tq output you mentioned are peak power, vs the fact that since this is a change in engine displacement, the instant torque may put more wear and tear on stock items, such as the case with his freinds previous swap?

Looks promising. Maybe some issues to consider:
* Is the radiator capacity sufficient?
* Ensure the cooling fans come on when up to temps
* Consider the stand alone ECU and keep the vehicle ECU for the other functions (you will be amazed at what it controls...)
* Will your fuel pump handle the new volume demands?
* If you do move the battery to the back use the very largest dia. cable you can fit. Between the resistance loss of the additional length and the increased draw from the bigger starter it may turn sluggish - or worse- catch fire....
