Default 4.083 install troubles...diy gurus help

i wanted to get some feedback from someone who actually installed the 4.083 ring and pinion gears onto the 350z's differential.

Please, only reply if you've installed this FD personally or experienced the install hands on

I currently have my differential with a good mechanic friend that's installing my 4.083 gears, but he's having trouble.

I ordered BNIB nissan frontier 4.083 ring and pinion gears, bnib side and pinion seals, and bnib crush sleeve. My installer said my bearings were still good so we reused them; he measured and shimmed the differential accordingly. The trouble he's having is when everything is bolted together, the ring gear would not touch the pinion gear at all. There is about a 1/4"-1/2" of an inch gap between the pininion ring gear. My installer tells me that he think something is missing on the pinion gear...

i've been lookin at rear end diagrams and cant seem to find what's missing...

frontier rear
350z base(non lsd) rear

from cross referencing both diagrams...all these parts are the same on both vehicles:
spacer housing
pinion bearing
bearing caps
side bearings

only thing i see different is on the fronther, the spacer housing part # is 38165, but on the z, the spacer housing part # is 38165M...would the "m" part matter at all?

well, can anyone chime in and help me?
any input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

I did the install like 9 months ago but I remember the only thing besides the bearings in there was the crush sleeve. 1/4"- 1/2" is a lot in there, there has to be something missing. Stupid question Did he press on the bearings all the way?

perhaps you're not using a manual transmission differential

dam...
i really dont know if my diff is from a 5at or 6spd since it was purchased off of ebay. After reading your reply, I went ahead and emailed the seller to see if he can clarify which one i have.

also, just in case the seller ignores me and i'm effed, i read here that I can count the teeths on the original ring gear and determine if i have an auto(47) or manual(46) unit; how true is that post?

*Back from dead*

Something else is wrong here. The Auto and manual rear ends will accept the same gear sets. *Correction. 3.5 gears fit in 3.3 pumpkins with a 10mm spacer, but 3.3's need to be mounted on a machined vlsd diff. I have a 3.7 gear set from an auto g37 non lsd diff and my 6mt vlsd 3.5 gears are in a 5at G35. You mechanic has done something wrong or you got the wrong gear set. Turbo guys put 5at 3.3 gears in 6mts all the time.

OP, post your findings and or solution. I hate when people ask for help and then abandon threads after they figure it out without posting the solution.

turbo guys who put 3.3 final drives in their manual cars all the time are also swapping differentials to either a stock, or aftermarket one for a manual transmission car.
