high gas prices! can I shift from 2nd to 5th?

the largest gain you will see in mpg will come from sticking to 55-60 mph and using the cruise at all times possible. Varrying speed is the killer, on accelaration, your mpg is about .5-3mpg.
When fully coasting in a hig gear, youre at 30 ish... the average of all the in betweens is what gives you a number like 18mpg etc.

bcann10101 (whatever) explained it pretty well.

also try taking a gear bike next time and putting it in top gear whenever you just start pedaling. it will wear you out reallllllly fast espicily if there are any hills and you have to start and stop repeditly

Shift from 2 to 5 all day long, if you time your shift properly neither your engine nor trans will ever know the difference.

Well said. I'd like to add if you really want to save some gas (wont likely show on the meter) let your car get up to operating temp before heading out. Cold engines need more fuel to sustain combustion. Also avoid taking off hard from a stop, or any rapid acceleration for that matter. Accel enrichments can be pretty hefty.
