I have an '03 6MT with 95,000 miles on it. Bought the car a year ago, and I have no service records before that. The manual says that the timing chain needs to be inspected every so often and when I took it to the mechanic, he said 'oh you dont have to worry about that ever'. Is this true? has anyone had any issues with theirs? Or am I just confused because the timing belt on other cars need to be changed out and stuff

Meh.. dunno.. call me worried about it.

 

I don't think you need to worry about the timing chain. It isn't like a belt that needs replacement every 60K or so.

 

I think it's possible for timing chains to stretch.....but I wouldn't think it's common...it would probably outlast the motor itself...


by the way, bmc how far off is your build? I remember you starting your thread about your dead motor quite a while ago....

fully rebuilt it. Using the same chain and gears etc?

 

i know its a common problem on higher hp rsx's to have the tensioner go bad. i think the chain itself in the vq would be fine, id look at the tensioner

 

I replaced the chains and guides for every build. The guides are the only thing that ever showed wear, especially on higher milage or oil burner donor blocks.
