Default Need Help Identifying NISMO LSD

Hey guys, just recently swapped out a pumpkin (my VSLD oem for his nismo lsd with 350EVO 3.9FD) with a fellow member here in 350Z. When I open the pumpkin to install the Nismo cover, this is what I found......

Can someone tell me if this in fact IS the Nismo LSD AND the 350EVO 3.9 FD?

I'm in the middle to doing the install, so I hope you guys can tell me what it is b4 I put it in......

Once you install it and make low speed turns you will hear if it really is a nismo lsd

And turn the input shaft, count the revolutions it takes for the axle shaft to make 1 complete revolution.

So that would determine the final gear? but what about the LSD? is this a Nismo LSD or OEM VLSD or even open?

^yes. if its an lsd when you spin the driveshaft or one wheel the other will go in the same direction. also your cruising speed with a 3.9 will be higher in the rpm range. and your gears will feel much shorter.

I sold him this NISMO LSD with 350evo 3.9 gears. I bought the gears from a friend here locally and the LSD was bought new. I'm going to look for the receipt for the LSD tomorrow, so I can verify. I drift my z a lot and got it for that exact reason get sideways extremely easy which my z does. My NISMO did not make slot of noise at all. I didn't really see much difference in the look but it is in fact the NISMO 1.5 way I did not put the internals in myself a differential shop did it. But ill do what I can to help you with the confusion.

Like I told Dex, I just want to confirm that this is in fact a Nismo clutch type LSD. The reason is when I opened the cover the LSD in it does not look like what I've seen on the forum:

The housing of the Nismo LSD from the link above is different from what I posted. I was going to confirm whether the LSD was set at 1.5 or 2 way. The passenger side end of the LSD housing of mine tapers more than what the Nismo LSD housing from the above link. When I looked at the opening in the middle of the housing, I could not see the little circle thing inside as indicated from the post. And that's what started my curiosity.......

In fact, the more I look at my pics, the more I think this is a VLSD and here's what I found for what a oem VLSD look like:

So like I said earlier, I just want to confirm what I bought is a Nismo LSD, not to start bashing anyone............ and if it's confirmed that it is, great. If not, well, then we can go from there. But before any confirmation, I do not want to point fingers whatsoever.

I'm hoping all the LSD gurus can chime in on this and help me out so that 1) I'm getting what I'm paying for, and 2) that there's no confusion/misunderstandings for both myself and Dex.

Looks like a VLSD unit to me but i could be wrong...

Also it looks like the input shafts are OEM too...i would imagine if the nismo ones were used that they would look "newer"

Hope everything works out for you. Some punk in NJ sold me a 3.3 VLSD instead of a 3.5. I did manage to sell it at a loss of $80 which isn't horrible.

Theres a real easy way to tell the difference. Take out the stub axles, main caps off, pull the diff, remove the ring gear and open up the diff itself.

That will cost you $20 in new ring gear bolts (do not reuse the bolts) and there will be no doubt.

Of course if you don't have a good torque wrench to reassemble then you really ought to buy one anyways.

I believe a viscous should be have like an open diff when turning by hand anyways so that should tell you as well

Just got an update from Dex, and here's his explanation:

"They (the shop) kept the NISMO internals for the LSD cause the housing cracked so they took it apart and took my stock vlsd apart and modded my stock to work like a aftermarket 1.5 way its not clutch type obviously as u can see. So basically what it came down to they made it a 1.5 way with some of the internals from the NISMO and with the gears so it still fells like a 1.5 that's why my car drifted so badass."

I have asked Dex to take the pumpkin back and return my money........ since this is obviously not what I was intended to buy.
