I can't really comment on the 1/4 part of your question, but I can sure say something about the cost of doing OEM LSD conversion.

I could not find a whole rear diff to simply swap. Instead, I managed to find a viscious unit itself with NO miles for $100 In order to swap that into a NON VLS (Viscious Limited Slip) rear end you have to add these parts. LSD bearing set and seals $100, stub axle's ment for a LSD equipped car $300. Add $400 to do all the disassembly and reassembly and my total cost was $900 and that's if you can can the oem unit for $100 or the whole LSD diff for $500. Frankly, if you get the Nismo LSD for $900, it comes with those bearings and stub axles, saving you $400 in extra parts. When I went to the dealer to do the swap, I did not know that I've have to buy and install those $300 stub axles. Had I known in advance that my final cost was going to be $900, I would have done the Nismo LSD route instead. Clutch type LSD is more effective than VLS.

Nismo LSD also allows you to change the lockup without disassembling the unit, doesn't it?
