Any write ups on how to swap? I can find how to swap differentials but not the final drive...

Any links would be great! I'm attempting to do this myself so it would save me $ and time if you could help!

245$ for a local shop to do it, I just need to run to dealership same day and pick up shims!

will be a 2 day downtime though ...

Any trained monkey can slap in a R&P set, but properly setting up a differential is an art, and I've found VERY few shops that know how to do it right. If you are not extremely mechanically-oriented and well-trained in building rears, I'd definitely pay the $$ to get someone reputable to do it. It'll save you a lot of money and frustration in the long run!

 

Dont bet on the required shims being in stock at the dealership or the supplying warehouse. I had a 3 months delay waiting for the correct shims when I setup my quaife and FD..

 

oh god... im getting ready to do this install myself and i just read this. i hope i dont get stuck with the same luck on my quaife and 4.083 fd install. where did you end up having to get the shims from?

 

Go to a reputable driveline shop , they one I use in Vegas builds diffs day in, day out. Both times I got my 3rd member back the next day.

It was $175 for my diff install , $225 for my 3.7 gear install a few months later.

 

Shims were ordered thru courtesyparts.com but there simply wern't any in the country at that time.

I built mine on a spare pumpkin i bought for $150, which was great because i had no down time but also led to procrastination because I could have made my own shims at work.

If you can find a shop (maybe Terrasmark's place does this) that has a lathe and a precision surface grinder, they could make you the required shims if they are not available....

 

lol im so glad my quaife and 4.08 combo didnt need shims other than stock. i did everything myself except the pinion press and torquing of the rear seal thing. $100 and the dude just went ahead and installed the rest of it so i just had to put the heavy a$$ diff on ther car. the guy supposedly really knows his $hit when it comes to differentials, year and a half later with no problems. Solid diff mounts going in wednesday FUN!

 

I had mine done at a shop and a year later it ate it's self. Cost me 300 labor and 5xx.x for a new ring and pinion over the initial cost.

I strongly suggest having it done at a qualified gear shop.
