Jeff@Performance told me the ideal settings are to advance timing 2 degrees and bump idle up 100rpm.

This seemed to do the trick for me (until I started playing with a TS ECU).

McDuck- Can you elaborate? I'm planning on doing cams but the only thing that is stopping me is that I don't know how the TS ECU will react- and I don't have any time to go down to TS for tuning (from bay area) in the next few months.

I think she is talking about the cam install timing not the motor idle timing.

I have a guy finding out for you if someone doesn't post the info sooner. But my question is how does VTCC play into cam timing/degreeing the cam when it varies it the whole time anyways?

You just went way over my head.

But I pulled the cams out to look at them and there are notches in various places on one end--does this maybe mean that they can only be installed one way that fits?

That's what I would THINK but I don't know for sure since I have never installed cams on the Z yet. Surely mcduck or mjedens or someone will post with something. BTW, what made you go with NISMO cams instead of JWT or Tomei or something?

Ease of installation and finding specs--plus not much overlap. Good for FI later on down the road.

So they are going to be easier to install than others? Also, what is the overlap on the NISMOs compared to Tomeis etc.

Sorry, Christi... misunderstood the question.

Yes, there is only one way they can go in.

First, all the cams are different lengths. So you put the Nismo cams in where the same length stock cams have come out.

Second, the notches and dowel pins should only allow the each cam to fit one way within the head. This is outlined in the service manual on pages EM69-EM70

Next, all the cam gears have markings so you know how to line them up. These coincide with lining up the timing chain which has a single yellow link that must be lined up on a specific mark on the crankshaft sprocket and two yelllow marks that line up with the intake camshaft sprockets.. great image of what lines up where on page EM55 of the shop service manual

Finally, all this is outlined in the service manual (pages EM48 to EM63)

Lastly, Christi, if you don't have a copy of the service manual, email me at mcduck@earthlink.net. I'd be happy to email the engine service section as an attachment. I only do this because you've been here and a positive contributor to the forums as much as anyone. 'Bout time someone gave something back. Oh... and there's that whole thing about being cute even if you are married!

Can't say right now... I have a theory I will be testing this regarding the Nismo Cams and the TS ECU. Should know more this weekend, but I think I may know why my Z is producing 10-20hp less than it should now and, if I am right, this will be rectified quickly.

Then I'm anticipating your results

Andy, thank you SOOOOOOOO much! I'm glad you could confirm that info for me!

And I *had* a copy of the service manual, but my dad, being the absent minded professor he is, seems to have misplaced it before he ever passed it along to his mechanic that's doing the install for me. I'll email you first thing in the morning from work (it won't block large file attachments ).

Oh ya, and thanks for the cute remark--better stop it though, you're gonna embarrass me.

Soooo... that's why the helmet in your avatar pic... you're getting so many compliments that you don't want everyone to see you blushing.

Appropriate that you will be emailing me from work since the manual is on my work laptop.

Why did you decide on the Nismo cams, instead of the more agressive cams? Esp now that there is a guy that can dyno tune our Z's.

I want to know what I'm getting into before I buy something. I could find all the info I needed on the NISMO cams, and they were actually a really good fit for what I'm trying to build.

I can't tell you how long I spent searching for info on Tomei's cams with absolutely no luck.

I did some searches on it, and what scared me off is the "shimming" (16 different sizes). Yikes. So is hubby doing the install? It would be nice to have a true private installer.

What are you expecting at the wheels? And are you going to get it dyno tuned?

We've installed about 10 set's of cam's now (nismo and another brand) The Nismo's SO FAR have not required any shim changes but the other cams did. No big deal, but we charge an extra 1 hour plus labor on the non-Nismo's.
