How bad is it for your car to rev it up to say 1500-2000rpms and then at the same time, slam the gas pedal and turn off the ignition? If I do this the engine very roughly slows down until it stops with a very violent shake and it sounds like a diesel firing a couple times. I've been told I could flood the cylinders but wouldn't the ignition cut off the fuel injection? Somehow the throttles are still opening because it sounds way different and you can hear more air going through there. Wouldn't cutting the fuel as you rev it and open the throttles up blow leftover fuel out? How bad is it for your car? Could I maybe mess up the bearings or something stopping that way? 2008 350z

Yeah. Every time I throw a handful of sand in the intake after going to a lot of needless inconvenience, the engine makes a crazy noise, too. Could these things be related?

 

Pretty sure the engine can take some ****. It would probably even be ok if you ran it with knock for a good while. I just wanted to know what specifically i could be messing up if I kept doing it. Still works and hauls *** so I'm happy

Well I've only done it once so if that messed it up I'd be pretty surprised. I had an rx8 with a rotary motor that if you shut down the engine early while it was still cold it would usually flood. I've heard u could avoid this by doing what I said. Prolly doesn't do anything beneficial like that in the z because its piston. Definitely a lot rougher and makes different noise. I don't plan on doing it habitually.

I remember for the Rotary engines it was good to bring the engine just below 2k rpms and then cut it off. That's for a rotary engine though, don't know why you'd think the same concept applied for a piston engine.

I think what our friend is referring to is dumping fuel into the combustion chamber prior to turning off the engine. I think this was some sort of myth that was from the good 'ole day of carburetors to help create a richer AFR under cranking the next time you start the engine. What it really does is wash down your cylinder walls with fuel, robbing them of any residual oil prematurely wearing out your rings. It also then continues to wash down the walls and seeps past the rings, into your oil sump. This then dilutes your oil causing other issues with all those pesky bearings in your engine.
As I continue to ramble on…. I can’t speak to wankle engines but you don’t need to do this, not then, not now. EFI has cleared up most cold start issues provided nothing is broke.
