Limp mode (fail safe) after messed with shift lock any ideas??
2004 350z auto trans drove great before and then I got in and poked my key down in the shift lock hole, just because all my other auto trannys didnt have that so I was unfamiliar with it, and then I when I went to start it up it sstarted great but when I started to drive away I noticed really harsh shifts and the tach wouldnt move at all... tcs light and slip light was illuminated. .. so I pulled over and messed with the shift lock hole agian and as I messed with it (through trial of key off and on over and over after messing with shift lock) the car wouldnt turn over only crank and brake light abs slip and tcs light all illuminated and the cooling fans would kick on constant.. eventually after messing with the shift lock more I got the lights to go out and the car to be back to normal.. got it home and parked.. the next day I went out and all the symptoms were back and the dash indicator that shows what range is seleceted (digital prndl) is blank no matter what gear and it wont turn over. I cleared the codes and I got a u1000 and p1124 to come back.. so any ideas help I was thinking a grounding issue? I checked a couple engine bay grounds all tight and clean the batt neg is tight as well as the positive... so any advice is welcome!
I was referring to the fact that none of this would of happened in the first place if you hadn't been curious and stuck your key in random holes.
I don't have an automatic so I am not familiar with this "shift lock hole". Exactly where is this hole? I'm thinking you might have shorted something sticking the key in there. You might be better off taking your car to a mechanic who can diagnose the problem. Be sure to tell him your problems started after sticking the key in the hole. If you want to attempt the repair yourself, here is a link to a service manual. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/350Z/coupe/2003/at.pdf

Tucker, most every automatic will have a means of unlocking the shift lever in the case of a dead battery etc. The 350Z as in most cars has a small plug next to the lever. Removing this plug and pushing a slender screwdriver or something down the hole will push the button releasing the shifter.
The design of this operation is not meant to put a car into limp mode. The trouble codes the OP got indicate the fault is elsewhere. Understandably, sticking your poker where it doesn’t belong can sometimes get you in a world of trouble. However if the OP was just fooling with the shift release button, I don’t think it’s related to the limp mode he is currently suffering.

Even then, this should only be a mechanical lockout on the shifter when no voltage is available.(Ex to tow or push to safety). I would be looking at FSM and be pulling that center console with battery disc. Good luck!
