Default Stock Dual Mass Flywheel question

2004 MT

Is it possible for the dual mass flywheel to fail ? Are there springs in it or a moving mechanism that might fail or wear-out ?

I am NOT talking about the pressure plate or clutch.

Occasionally I get a grinding like noise while changing gears. The noise does not occur when I am shifting. It happens in the last few very brief moments when I let up on the clutch pedal. It does not happen consistently.

I know from experience that when the synchros go bad, you will get grinding when you are at highway speeds, push in the clutch, and shift up or down (with the pedal depressed all the time). This is not currently my situation.

The noise only happens when letting up on the clutch.

The flywheel has bushings in it IIRC that allow it to absorb vibrations and whatnot. But that shouldn't cause a grinding sound.

Is it a specific gear or all gears?

2 and 3 mostly. I did hear it on 4 once.

Maybe the springs on the clutch disk have weakened ?

(I've been shifting "easy" so as to not push/aggravate the problem, it seems to help)

Are you keeping the RPM's really low?

You might be hearing chatter which is normal at low RPM. It is even more present when you use a lightweight flywheel.

Regards, JCat:

Looks like the long-winded fella who wrote this doesn't care much for a dual mass flywheel.
