Default i suspect a leak in my flex pipe (y-pipe)?

I've been thinking I have a leak in my y-pipe because the braided part of the flex pipe is starting to get somewhat torn. Anyhow I had a friend start the car for me while i was near the flex pipe and when the engine was revved I felt air come out from around the braided section.
This question may sound silly but that's not supposed to happen right? I wasn't exactly sure. I just don't want to change out my y-pipe thinking I have a leak when something like that may be normal.
Thanks

I have searched but could not find anything.

if you feel exhaust, there is a leak. nothing is supposed to leak.
