One of the most important things for having a quick car is to keep the car at the highest H.P. through the whole race or the 1/4 mile.

So lets say one car makes 300h.p at 6,000 rpm & another car makes 275 H.P. also at 6,000 rpm, both cars are driven by drivers that are completely equal in driving skills, will the 300H.P win the race ????? OFF COURSE !! ????? maybe, maybe it will loose by 5 car lengths.

That's where the H.P. curve comes in AND GEARING! (remember?).
Now read the first sentence. ^^^^^^^ at the top^^^^^^^^^^

My car made top H.P. at (I'll round it off) 7,000 rpm so I didn't shift at 7,000 rpm because after shifting, the car's rpm would drop & go way under my highest H.P. rpm level of 7,000 rpm. and it would take a long time to get back to 7,000 rp(car goes slow). So I shifted at 7,500 rpm

Now that video was when the car had 3:90 gears so the tach dropped lower & it took longer to get back up. Also I crossed the finish line at 7,000 rpm NOT the 7,500 rpm so with the 3:90 gears I was much better than with stock gears BUT not as good as with the 4:08 gears that I switched to.

With the 4:08 gears after shifting the rpm didn't drop as low so I was at a higher H.P level cause it was closer to the 7,000 rpm (highest h.p. level) & shifting at 7,500 rpm then dropping to 6,500 rpm kept the 7,000 rpm(highest H.P. level) in the middle and staying there the longest time.

SO, first sentence-KEEPING the car at THE HIGHEST H.P. LEVEL for THE LONGEST TIME PRODUCES THE QUICKEST CAR. Makes sense????

GEARING? (VERY IMPORTANT!!!) work on it next time...
Interesting. You launch high, shift high, and end high in the rpms. I catcha. So get all my mods together, then get to gearing. You helped a lot in this process. What are your mods precisely though? If you dont mind me asking

As far as mods, test pipes, 4:08 gears, racing wheels and tires on front & rear(auto car may not need that), Alum. fly wheel, H.D. Act STREET clutch, tune/up rev, and after my car got flooded I just took my stock muffler(had sand in it) off at the track.

Plus I drove like hell !!!!

So 3.9 for daily driving would be good, right?

Default it's not that simple as guessing on a number

A 5spd. automatic trans gear numbers from 1st to fifth vs a 6 spd manual trans numbers are not the same. So guessing or even talking about it is pointless & just a waste of time. Unless someone that has some info on racing/driving (DD) speaks up, tommy/andre will not do the leg work on gearing of auto vs manual. Besides, the car should get mod(s)? & a tune FIRST, gearing should be LAST with TIRE SIZE thoughts & a drag strip test run done FIRST & see how many gears(shifts) & rpm the car does.

Until that happens my only opinion will be,,,, FINE, 3:90 sounds good

When getting a tune, you need to find a good/experienced Osiris/up-rev tuner & ask him to raise the redline & rpm shifting points higher. I'm not going to give you number because an EXPERIENCED tuner will know/do it right. HR cars can & should be shifted & have redlines at higher levels than DE cars.

Good luck,
Andre

Default I have a good idea

I no longer have that 350z, long story. I bought a 2012 370z base automatic.

Since I had my old 3:90 gear with LSD pumpkin at home, I was fine/happy to find & buy a BASE model. As soon as I got the car I took it to my friendly Nissan dealer to switch pumpkins. Stock gears in a 370z automatic is 3.20 something? but it's a 7 spd. So I went from a 3:20 something to a 3:90.

Later I went to my local shop for test pipes & a tune. My shifting points (under load/racing)from the factory was checked at the track before the tune/test pipes was 7,500 rpm. I was fine & felt safe with 7,500 shifting points. Unfortunately at the track my trans. shifted into 5th gear several yards BEFORE the finishing line. Going into 5th, that extra shift was not what I wanted. The fix was easy, I mounted SLIGHTLY larger tires on the rear stock wheels and now I can & did go through the ET finish line in 4th gear. All this because I ALREADY HAD a 3:90 pumpkin.

My recommendation would be to ask the shop that tunes your car & sets the redline/shift points what rear gears they would recommend.

Since I have a 7spd & you a 5spd, the shop would be a good place to get advice/help.........

Oh yes, it's still a good DD. At 60 mph my rpm is at about 3,000 rpm....

Thanks! A little off subject, how is the 370 compared to the 350 HR if you had one. Thanks again!

The stock fd for the auto is 3.3.

If you are serious about the 1/4 mi I would go with the 3.7 or the 3.9 to keep you from shifting into 4th at the end of the 1/4. If not I would go with the 3.9.

o_O

I would love to test drive a setup like that. Do you have a shift kit? With the short gears it must be very fun on a backroad
