P0078 Code - Please Help
Hello guys,
This is my very first post and this is the first time I own a Z so dont be mean, ok?
Please note that I just got my car a couple of days ago: 350z 06 Track Edition with VQ35DE and 6 Speed MT.
The Check engine light was on and the code shown on the scanner was P0078, as per my google search this is related to the Exhaust Valve Controller solenoid not working properly, but I am not very Nissan enlighted (Ex Subaru owner) so...
What I would like to know is:
1- What causes this?
2- What do I need to do to fix it?
Keep in mind that I live in the Dominican Republic so, sending me to your preffered mechanic wont really help me :P
Here is a picture of my HYPER MEGA STOCK Z:

Welcome to the forum and beautiful Track model you have there, it's a shame it doesn't have the Track wheels.
I'm not familiar with that code but a quick search on the forum should net you the answers you're looking for.

If that's a US spec car it's a rev up which has variable cam timing on the exhaust where the DE did not. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say maybe one or both of the exhaust cam solenoids are sticking or bad.

Hello,
In regards to searching the forum before posting, it was the first thing I did and came out with no results.
I don't think mine is the US Spec version since my engine looks like a DE (single intake, Hood doesnt have the bulk in the middle as the HR models do).
Is there any way I can determine for sure if my engine is a DE or HR, and in case it is a DE, is this a common problem or this would be a new one for you guys?

Looks like the 2006 350z track came with the rev up and single intake. If its giving you the code for the variable exhaust solenoid, more than likely thats what it is but you must verify it. you would not be getting that code if you had a vq35de,as the de is only variable on the intake side. The code seems to be a bank 1 exhaust solenoid,so unless it changed from the de cylinder lay out which i doubt,Bank 1 should be on the passenger side. The exhaust cams are located on the outside of the engine.Intake cams are located on the inside of the engine. What you can do if you have the engine in the picture Ive pasted is disconnect the the variable passenger side exhaust solenoid connector.Hopefully you u have a code eraser. So erase the code before and after you disconnect the connector to the pass. side exhaust solenoid. If you have the same code pop up after disconnecting the connector and cycling your car on and off a couple times while revving it a little everytime its on you have found your prob. If you get a different code then let us know, this sounds like a simple solenoid replacement.Hope this helps.Get back to us on what you find I don't like helping people and not getting feedback after they make repairs.
