Default Knocking in my engine

So awhile back, I was driving through the canyons. I had an oil change coming up soon. I was going to do it the next day, until my engine started knocking. I don't know what happened but it sounds like a diesel right now. I have yet to tear into it, I plan on doing it this weekend. I read up on this knocking and apparently it's common. I wanted to know about what it could be and the best way to go about fixing it. I don't plan on taking it to a mechanic because I'm a mechanic in the Marines. So I know how to rebuild engines. Can anybody tell me if they had this problem and what exactly it was? Please and thank you!!

You're a mechanic and you can't diagnose your issue?

LOL

If the knocking sound is most noticeable inside the cabin and not outside (sounds almost like valvetrain click on the outside), it could be the fuel damper, mine became very loud before I replaced it.

If it is a loud knock/clang heard in the engine bay and outside, then it could be anything from the valvetrain to the rod bearings, how was your oil pressure/level?

Mechanic for the Marines, closer to an inspector than a commercial mechanic.

No disrespect.
