just took this.. you can see it in action. i tried closing it again, but the fumes were getting to me

edit... i have a remote that i can open and close them anytime i want

I'm almost positive these kinds of systems are designed purely to deliver a better sound. I've driven corvettes, audis, porsches, etc that have these systems and there was no difference in performance between the two settings. Only difference was how loud the exhaust was. A lot of them are tuned to not be loud at common cruising speeds as well. It's actually a really nice thing to have.
