Default VQ35DE Ticking - Engine Noise Video

Hello everyone!

Is this engine noise normal? I'm new to Nissan/Infiniti & the engine seems very loud to me.. I'm hoping it's not valvetrain/shim related or worse, thanks for watching!

Sounds like lifter tick. Normal for the most part. A lot of Z's have it if not all.

Default Thanks!

Thanks guys, I'm going to listen to some other cars in person to compare. The car has 68K miles & always serviced by the dealer at the correct intervals, I believe the original owner complained about ticking noise when pulled up to the side of a building back in 2012 with 48K on the car & the dealer said it was normal. That's actually how I noticed it, picking up medicine from Walgreens.

Sounds normal to me. Pretty sure my 03 DE does the same.

Thanks for the reply! =)

I did end up comparing it to another 2006 G35 Sedan the dealer had, and while that one wasn't as loud as mine they basically sounded the same. I'm not used to DOHC engine or this engine design.

Lol, unfortunately I do. I should be able to tell you exactly want is causing mine in a few weeks.

Mine is isolated to passenger side under the intake manifold on the #2 cylinder. Mine is so loud it's making my knock sensor go crazy. I get 500 count at 10/15% throttle going to 3k rpms.

That's not a tick, that's a motor slap^ Lol

Also yours came from the block area, OP's seems faint and from the intake mani which is usually just lifters and such.

When i put a stethoscope on it, it's defiantly louder at the cylinder head and not the block. Would that still be motor slap?

I'd still say yea. Your video sounds a LOT like my friends when they throw bearings or rods. If you notice the other 2 videos theirs is rotational. Yours is all the way through the firing order.

If that's normal that's one hell of a lifter tick. Probably the worst I've heard yet.

Dont restart your build until this is fixed!

Tell those funkers to fix it! You paid to have it done right!

Your oil should be a huge tell if you actually did.

You should have some massive shavings or straight up metal parts in your oil pan. That's the first thing I would do.

If the shop does open the block make sure the pistons aren't hitting your valves or over extending the walls.

Nothing crazy when I changed my oil, there was a very slight metallic shimmer in the oil but I figure that's from the rings setting. There was no metal pieces on the lower pan when I pulled it off i added two magnets to my oil filter to catch the metal though.

I told them to listen to it once the car is not leaking. I'm not taking the car home until they address the noise.

Yea that's normal from a new engine which is why you want the change the oil at 500, 1000 and 3000 miles. "Engine break in".

But yea I would have them address that as well. Everything is just a guess until someone actually gets in there and looks. But like I said that patter sounds really similar to when my friends blew their sht.

I'm still trying to track down the video my buddy sent me of his thrown rod when he got home the day he blew it. Also does it continue when you rev it? If it goes away it's not as serious. If it gets worse or stays there yea something is 100% wrong.

It stays the same regardless of temp, I can't hear it when I'm setting in the car so I don't know what's going on when there is load on it. But when it free revs the tick speeds up with the some.

I should have put my go pro Mic in there while I drove it around to see how it sounds at certain rpms.
