Question Axle Stub Issues

After reading codes for my ABS light, I found that it was due to my passenger side rear wheel speed sensor. After investigation, I found that the axle stub is no longer sealed into the side of the dif like it should be. I read on some other threads about how all I needed to do was order a new circlip to reinstall.

My question is how do I reinstall the axle stub? Does the clip on onto the axle stub and then into the side of the dif? Or do I fit the circlip into the groove first and then try to slide the axle stub in?

I tired both ways and had trouble getting the splines to match up. Both ways I tried it the axle stub would bottom out on the clip before the splines even had a chance to line up. I tried hammering it into place but had no luck.

Any ideas on how to get it reinstalled? Do I need to take out the whole dif to get enough leverage to hammer it in?

Any help would be appreciated.
