Well well it was a nice thought. But even with a stem swap the 370z coils aren't plug and play. Both coils are made by the same manufacturer. The second picture is the 370. The third is the 350 OEM. With the new ones installed, the car started quickly enough but was misfiring a lot. I pulled the coils, reinspected them, cleaned the contacts and reinstalled them. No change. Additionally, 370 packs fitted with 350 stems sit too high such that they cant cover the spark plug wells or even be bolted down. For you lurkers reading this in 2021, dont waste your time with coil packs from other cars.
Since I still have to pull them out anyway I'll test to see if any of the packs are bad. But I'm honestly still curious about the R8 packs. Too bad they're 4-pin. They wouldn't fit the 350 motor.

Sorry it didn't work, does make me wonder about the splitfire and okada coils tho. I know it won't be a lot of power but smoothness and efficiency is what I would be looking for lol.
thanks for trying. I'm still wondering about the R35 coils. the video made it sound like those coils could be taken apart, similar to what you did with the 370Z coils (I guess all the Nissan equipped are pretty similar in form-factor).
I just installed VQ37HR coils in my VQ35de powered 350Z, they were a direct swap besides changing the "coil boot" and needing longer bolts to bolt the coil down....🤷🏿*♂️
I'm running a Haltech Elite 2500, not sure if the stock emu is the issue.

They bolt down and cover the spark plug hole just fine, you just need longer bolts.

I never came back to update. I had everything installed but accidentally switched the plugs between the aft two drivers side cylinders. That caused the misfire. If I can figure out the length and width of replacement bolts I'll reinstall and post results. But I've had my hands full restoring a VF750, SV650 as well as replacing ball joints tie rod ends diff bushings etc. Its been a long summer..
I compared pictures of the 350 and 370z ports. They look compatible. Anyway I ordered a used set off of eBay this morning so I'm officially going to test the concept.
I'll post my findings and a couple of pulls for comparison. Street, not dyno. What am I made of money?..
The short of it: Throttle feels more awake.
At last I reinstalled the 370 coils. Originally I accidentally swapped plugs for the aft 2 drivers side coils which caused the misfire. I put them in yesterday. Rather than ordering new bolts for mounting, I just plugged them in. The tight fit and inflexible wiring harness will likely eliminate any risk of poor connection. The spark plug also connects to a flexible spring that travels through the boot. Since the whole point of the mode is to increase spark I wasn't expecting a noticeable difference. But while driving home on the highway I felt like the 10% throttle I used to maintain speed was a little more responsive. Likewise hammering up 2nd and third on a local road felt a little more lively. This may just be confirmation bias, but improved combustion could explain this change. If the cpu were tuned, I think these could make even more of a difference. All in all I'm pleased, but would love to see actual numbers.
370Z coils and GT-R coils are the same thing and our a very good coil, they are better than 350Z coils but they are 14mm not 17mm, Audi coils are 17mm and have the same dwel as 350Z's so the swap works.
yeah. There were pretty good gains just plug n play without even touching timing yet.
if you read that link it’s pretty good.
The wiring is pretty straightforward.
I ordered some oem mercury optimax coils. I’m going to print some brackets or just bolt one side to the valve covers.
once you get them wired in and hooked up please post the results. (Butt dyno or real)
I think ballengermotorsports have the pigtails.
Just got some ign1a coils and got the dwell settings from haltech map vs rpm n voltage.
the dwells they recommend are pretty high.
Over 6ms at 200kpa if I remember correctly.
I’ve been on solidworks cad drawing up some VQ35 ign1a brackets. Haven’t seen anyone have these in the forums yet. I guess I’ll be the first to go. I’ll report back in a couple weeks once I get these wired up and mounted.
I’m using accel 8mm wires for this. I’m trying to keep them as short as possible. Comes with vise crimpers like back in the day.
