Skyline RB25DETT in our 350z ?

I'm sure there's been tons of guys who have thought of this, many probably figured it wont work, some probably still are wondering if it will work. But also i bet there are some guys who actually KNOW whether this will work or not.
I see we can buy a used RB26DETT engine (AKA engine from a skyline) Ebay about $5,500 for one it reads "This is a RB26DETT engine with less than 30K original miles from japan is in very excelent conditions , complete with transmsission and computer, harness is also available " (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33615). I was just thinking, why spend $8k on a TT setup for our engine, that weve only seen max HP up around 450 with MANY MANY mods, when we could drop the skyline engine which has a variety of modifications that can signicantly boost power for sure. I'm sure our car being RWD while a skyline is AWD might be huge problem, but i really am a big newbie with how cars work and how switching engines works/doesnt work. Feedback on this would be great from some experts!

Edit: I'm aware the Jun car was much more than 450 hp, but then again that wasn't a VQ35DE, and it wasn't a production Twin Turbo setup like our Greddy/PE kits, it was a single on a 3.0 engine.

well... paying someone to do the custom fabrication for mounting and complete re-wiring, I imagine it would be in excess of over $10k all said and done. I would like to this with a different motor (SR20DET). The 4WD really isn't that big of a deal. You could just use the transmission from the RWD skyline GTS-T as it bolts up just fine to the GTR RB26DETT. If you are serious, be sure to do your homework to know exactly what you are getting into. To tell you the truth it would be easier to run a stand alone fuel system like Haltech or something similar.

TopicsII swapped to the SR20DET. Dropped 700 lbs and now has 370 whp. But cost a pretty penny.

One of the major problems I see with swapping to a RB26DETT (besides cost) is availablity of parts here is the US.
But if you have another car as a daily driver and the $$ then it might be kind of fun. I know there were some guys that were swapping the RB26DETT but I think the project was halted.

The SR20DET may be a better swap; it's easier to get parts, saves a ton of weight, plus you can find a good S13 blacktop for around $4000, versus trying to track down a RB26 which may cost twice as much.

The Batl Ground Z was never completed and taken apart and sold stock. I looked into an RB swap just out of curiousity and it is expensive. I asked a Nissan engine swap specialist (Unstable Hybrids) and they gave me a very rough estimate of $20k. It included an R34 (newer) RB26DETT AWD swap with the R34 OBD II monitoring system displayed on a screen in the car just like the R34 GT-R with labor. If I had the money, I'd do it. One more thing, that engine on Ebay you're showing has been on and off Ebay for over a year now.
I talked with a shop in Georgia awhile back. They do swap the RB engine in, they will also fit a supra engine if that is what you are looking to do. I can't for the life of me remember what the shops name is right now, but I do remember it costs $15,000 for the swap, which includes a rebuilt RB engine, and tranny. I also remember they said figure 6 weeks for install time. I decided against it because all the $15,000 gets you is a smaller motor with less hp. Yes I understand that it has huge potential, but that potential cost money as well. I figure I can build the VQ, turbo it, and not have much more into it than I would spending the cash on a RB. Plus no one has any idea of what a built turbo VQ is capable of anyway and if she can put out 400+ with stock internals I'll bet there is a lot more room to go with built ones

First, you mean an RB26DETT not an RB25DETT. Nissan made an RB26DETT that was a twin-turbo 2.6L in-line 6-cylinder with 8.5:1 compression in the AWD R32-R34 GT-Rs. They also made an RB25DET that was a single turbo 2.5L in-line 6-cylinder with 9.0:1 compression in the RWD R33-R34 Skyline GT-S.
Without a lot of modification, you won't be able to get one to fit. Just measure the distance between the cooling fan and the firewall. An RB is a much longer block and the space is already tight for our V-6. There is a large amount of room in front of the radiator and A/C condenser in the bumper. If you could make a different radiator and A/C condenser that could fit in the front bumper, then may be able to get enough space to fit one. Trying to put a 2JZ-GTE from a supra would be worse. Our cars were just designed with shorter engine compartments.
Strangely, RX7s and 240SXs had lots of front space by comparison. Take a look at an FCD3 as see how much room there is from the radiator to the wankel housing. It is really shocking at how long the boost hoses are because of how long the front end really is. While a KA24 is a fairly long block for a 4-cylinder, there is still plenty of entra room in a 240SX. SR-20's look almost tiny in their engine comparments with how much open room is in front. There are 2 companies making RB swap kits for S13s and S14s.
I think a better option right now will be to just work with bolt-on power like a Vortech supercharger. If you want to go more serious, look at building up the VQ35. Keep in mind that the next GT-R will have a twin turbo 3.2L VQ, so VQ parts are only going to get more plentiful.

the concensus (mine) is this:
benefits:
1) more reliable engine for boost. i don't believe I've seen any vq's driving around reliably with 20psi of boost.
2) speed (not acceleration), but the increased redline of minimum 8000 will allow a greater speed in each gear, enough to offset a tall FD like a 350evo 3.9 df.
3) more tunable. there are a million +1 turbo kits, cams, and internals for the rb26 (and rb25), but they are hard(er) to get in the u.s. then 350z parts (go figure)
4) more horsepower. the rb26 should ultimately rev higher then a built vq and make more HP. it should make less torque though.
5) lower center of gravity. the motor will sit lower then the VQ. the center of gravity will be lowered, and the motor weight is slightly less then the vq35 as well.
6) access to 'many' engines/trannies. there is a large amount of rb26's available, and as more and more r34's in japan reach the 30k KM mark, more spare engines will enter the market. therefore destroying a RB26 short or long block would be a less costly mistake then destroying a VQ35.
7) extra engine and tranny. have a nice VQ laying around. table maybe? j/k
8) inline engine. i like the inline engine feel and smoothness. a 90 degree V would be nice too (lower cent of gravity), but i don't think the VQ is.
okay, detriments, costs, drawbacks...
1) cost. signal auto wants about 20k to swap a rb26/rb25 trans, do all the wiring and custom mounts. cost includes the parts. this is for a stock rb26dett, in and running.
2) electronics. no abs/vdc/or other driving inhibitors. a/c shouldn't function as well either, but there is no sense in trying to fit the A/C condensor in with such a swap.
the gauges also have to be rewired somehow, since they are in the CAN system (thanks miaplaya). thats not too much of an issue anyway. the Rb26 for sure should have a 10k tach with it. the VQ tach ends at 8k rpm (theoretically continues, without dial indicators though).
3) weight distribution on the front axle. the rb26 is longer then the VQ, and the car would therefore technically be a front engine, rather then front-mid engine. an sr20 should yield a true front-mid engine with the engine barely over the front axle.
4) less torque. while a vq should produce more torque earlier, i prefer to maintain speed rather then build it, which imo HP helps with more then torque.
