Default How do I get the crank pulley off??

This is getting ridiculous.

I already broke one socket and one 3/8 inch ratchet. Last night, I went to sears and I picked up a 190 pc tool set. So this morning I tried to get it with a 1.2 inch drive with a bout a 20" breaker bar and that didn't work. I then tried the same breaker bar with my 3d maglight stuck on the end for extra leverage. (It's a sturdy aluminum tube) and that didn't work either.

How did those of you who installed new pulleys get the nut off?
Thanks.

Put the breaker bar with a pipe on the crank pulley nut. Put it so it sits at the 5 o'clock position and its touching the ground. Then just hit the starter quickly and use the engines force to break it loose. I used this techinique and it worked. Got it loose in 30 seconds...

What if he can't sustain the force as the engine turns? He and the breaker bar will fly straight into the ceiling. It sounds like this technique can work very well, but at the same time can be very painfully dangerous.

Sorry you are having a hard time, but I got it done with a 1/2 drive socket wrench and a hockey stick as my breaker bar which was about 3 1/2' long and it took some effort but the bolt came off easily so with just 20" is going to hard

I used a 3 foot piece of conduit over my torque wrench. I eventually broke the torque wrench (it actually bent during the process!) and a small chunk broke off of the rad shroud, but that damn pulley bolt came off!

If the pulley bolt is this hard to come off, how are you guys putting this thing back on and torquing it correctly. Should be harder to put back on than to take off... right

I would think the opposite. Less rust, corrosion, and metal-metal bonding to have to deal with.

I still used a bar to tighten it up, just now as hard though.

LOL, you are picturing this techinique wrong in your head. Once you set the breaker bar and pipe on the ground, you do not hold it. It sits there, so when you blip the ignition the starter turns the motor, it will loosen itself because the bar is touching the ground so it wont move. Get it? This is not dangerous to the installer at all man, and its no stress on you. I had a breaker bar with a 3 foot pipe and a person in the car on the breaks in 6th gear and I was spinning the motor. I tried this technique and it worked immediately.

When you say "blip" the motor, you're actually starting the engine then turn it off, right? What's that , about 2-3 seconds?

Oh! I had this procedure all reversed. I thought the breaker bar's end was supposed to be pushed down upon, but now it makes much more sense.

I bliped it twice. When I say blip I mean I barely turn the starter, when I hear the engine turn I release the key. So two blips, about half a second each...get it?? And DO NOT turn on the motor when doing this...just turn the key until you barely hear the starter.

Some people actually like working on their cars and saving a buck doing it. I did it in about 30 minutes and I saved $75...I can go dyno my new mods with that and go to the track 1 night.

One responder said it cost $75. My local shop told me it would take 2-3 hours to install at $65/hour. Is this a total rip or is that actually how long it takes to do it "right"?

Total rip. I did it with a bud on the brakes and it took about 1 hour total, which included jacking and putting the front on stands, removing the diffuser, etc.

My bud ended up having his put on in a shop for $45. They did it in 30 minutes on a lift.

Thank you for the first-hand information. I really like the guys at my local shop, so that is disappointing if they are trying to milk me. He told me they probably would have to take off the radiator to do it correctly, and subsequently drain it and re-fill it. I am afraid of the responses that is going to get...
