Default Borla Rattle?

Just installed my borla true dual exhuast. Took the car out for a spin and noticed a rattle sound when reving in neutral. Sounds like it's coming from the middle but I tightened all the clamps pretty well and dosn't sound like an exhaust leak. Anyone able to help?

I also have Borla TD.

I had H pipe welded yesterday but i still hear the noise SOMETIME.

My next guess is at the two reuse gasgets (4 thin sheets of metal) between the cats and cat back.

Did you install spacers between the black U brace and the chassie? If not, that is where your rattle is. Get some spacers it will stop.

Good Luck!

Alrighty well I reused the gaskets so I'm going to have to check the h-pipe again. Also can you point me in the right direction of a place to pick up spacers?

You could check with Jeff or Jason @ performance nissan. They supply some when you purchase RT Cats. However, they may have some loose ones for sale. Or you could just go to a hardware store and buy some washers. You would need to make ithem about a 1/4 inch thick.

Okay, I know the issues you are talking about.

The h-pipe leak I had (until today). I tried many solutions. The best one is to go to your local "dirt cheap" exhaust shop and have them weld it. It the sound is like a spitting noise when on throttle, then it is the h-pipe.

If you sound is more like a vibration or a rubbing, then you need to check your clearance. Spacers are not necessary in all cases. Just look at the pipes. Usually the clearance issue is at the pipes just rear of the h-pipe. If not installed correctly, they will bend too low and hit the cross brace. Just use a GIANT wrench to grab those suckers and rotate them to a position with better clearance. For more info on this type of rattle, PM my buddy "Buff". He had this issue.

Good luck.

I had mine installed two weeks ago at a Nissan dealer. The car had a vibration and a loud in-cabin noise. I rechecked the installation and found that they meesed up. The left resonator was installed on the right side and right in left eliminating clearance at some areas like cross brace at the left and differential box at the right. After reinstallation, clearance was rechecked some tubes were turned and problem was solved.

My advice, go to a muffler shop, have that thing checked from front to back and start enjoying your Borla.

Went to the local muffler shop and had the exhuast checked. Turns out it was a leak at the H pipe. Had them weld that sucker up and it sounds awesome now. Thanks again for all the tips.

Did he welded it where the clamp is? Mine did so the clamp on H pipe is now stuck to the pipe. I will not be able to remove the clamp in future.

Now that you welded the h-pipe your warranty is now void from borla, I called borla and asked them......also make sure nothing is rattling agains that sway bar.

No we removed the clamp from the h-pipe. Why would he weld the clamp? Sounds like a bad idea.

Unfortunatly most Z's around us with the borla exhaust end up coming to us to fix them...

To get the H-Pipe to clamp up properly you must wrap the two pipes with a large clamp and clamp the two pipes as close as you can togetherand then clamp up the clamp on the H-Pipe... you need extreeemeforce to pull those two pipes close to eachother to get them close to get the H-Pipe to seal..

The rest of the exhaust is a challenge too...

but you can get it to be quiet... get some exhaust goo too... that will help...

good luck!

I wanted to tell him to remove the clamp first but too late, he already welded it.

I just installed the Borla TD this weekend myself, and I know what your talking about with the H pipe. I got it clamped together and so far everything sounds fine. And yes, you have to rotate the pipes near hte rear sway bar so that they don't rattele. There is very very little clearence room for it.

sup guys?

I was wondering how hard this exhaust system is to install. I just ordered one and I plan on installing it myself over the weekend.

This thread has proven to be very informative.

The exhaust is a pretty straight forward install. Just need some jack stands and you can do it if you don't mind the cramped space. The h-pipe was a pain in the ***. Otherwise its fairly fun and simple.
