From ClubG35:
SAN FRANCISCO (June 3, 2004) – Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury division, today announced a number of significant enhancements to its popular G35 sport coupe and G35 sport sedan for the 2005 model year in North America. The changes include the introduction of a new coupe Sport model, a redesigned exterior appearance for the sedan and a redesigned instrument panel and console area with aluminum trim or optional wood trim on both the 2005 G35 coupe and G35 sedan.
Another major enhancement for the new model year is an increase in power for all G35 sedans to 277 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque (from 260 hp/260 lb-ft). The G35 sedan lineup, which added a new all-wheel drive version in the 2004 model year, also receives new exterior styling for 2005 – featuring a new hood, grille, bumpers, side sills, taillights and wheels.
The G35 coupe’s new Sport model will be available in an advanced 5-speed automatic transmission or with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission. The Sport 6MT model receives an additional 15-plus horsepower over automatic-equipped G35 coupe’s standard 280 horsepower, bringing its power to the 295-horsepower range (final figures to be released later).
In addition, the manual transmission design on both coupe and sedan models has been improved to provide a lower shifting effort.

That'll pretty much put it on par with the Z acceleration wise... In all honesty, I have had no idea what nissan was thinking making the 350z and the G35C the way they did. I think they did the Z a disservice making it so close performance wise to another car in their own lineup... The Z was always meant to be a stand alone car... it has a history.. shoes to fill. This is their pride and joy, why wash it out by making it so similar to another car they have, one with absolutely not history at all to it?
Very lame move imo.... the Z should have more power, better handling... and run circles around anything else NIssan/infinity offers.
I love the Z.. but this new age of platform sharing and cost cutting has done it a great great disservice.

I don't think the Z and G are all that similar...I mean they are similar, but they are by no means identical. Nissan is striving to break-up the potential demographic of customers for these kinds of cars and rather than having 16-50 be the target they are segmenting into something like 16-30 and 25-50. Though there will be some overlap, most people in the younger range will go for the Z and in the older range for the G35. The g35 weighs a couple of hundred more pounds and has a couple more seats. It is also a lot more of a quality luxury sports car rather than whatever you would describe the Z as being.
My concern about having the Z run circles around everything will be when the Skyline hits the US. That should run circles around everything else. Unless nissan basically makes the skyline a turbo Z or something...i dunno

The G35 (known as the Nissan Skyline 350GT in Japan) has a lot of history. And before anybody flames me, not all Skylines are GT-Rs. You have the regular Skyline (which the G35 is), then the Skyline GT-R. Although rumor is that Nissan will ditch the "Skyline" name and just call their supercar that is coming out in 2007 as just simply "GT-R".
From a marketing stand-point, I expect Nissan to bump horsepower of the 350Z to at least 300 to stay ahead of the G35 coupe.

The question is what did they do to get the additional 15 HP? They probably got it with little or no extra noise. We will want that technology for our existing cars!

and since the Z ECU is such a tough nut to crack, only the few handful of computer wizards that programmed it will know what to do to reprogram the parameters. My guess is that you won't simply be able to "do" this to existing cars.

I think they went with, possibly, better exhaust and slightly more advanced timing and/or better a/f ratio. The gains from these mods alone can far surpass the 15 "marketing" hp gain at the crank. In fact, we know that just ONE of those mods could qualify for a 15hp gain at the crank - in the way that Nissan would advertize it (as the ECU gains around 7-10, while the exaust gains around 6-8, each at the wheels)
