Default Part II review of 3.9 gear 1/4 mile

I went to Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, WI last night. Sort of a mixed review of the quarter mile. Due to track conditions, I was never in danger of breaking 13.6. In very slick conditions, I ran the times in the left column. The right column is for comparison.

3.9 Gearing___________ 3.5 Gearing (Past similar runs)

13.94/101.87 (60' - 2.10), 13.92/100.50 (60' 2.08)
13.94/101.82 (60' - 2.11), 13.96/99.81 (60' 2.12)
13.98/101.12 (60' - 2.09), 13.97/99.44 (60' 2.11)
14.01/101.90 (60' - 2.13), 14.01/100.50 (60 2.15)
14.00/101.53 (60' - 2.15), 14.00/100.34 (60' - 2.14)

all others where higher, slower or worse 60'. I can regularly hit 2.0* and even 1.9* on a good track with street tires. If anyone wants to see the slips I can scan them tonight. The times on the right are the closest times I could find which approximate the runs from last night on the left. Temps, Altitude and humidity are variables, but all were realtively close.

I had about 12 runs in all. While e.t.'s were not very impressive, what I did notice right away were the trap speeds. In my prior outings I would have been hard pressed to get into the 100's with these times. I looked back through my slips and found many very simliar runs and concluded that I picked up a solid 1.5+ mph through the traps. My car is pretty slow through the traps with my best being a 13.6/101.43. I'll probably head out to the track one more time this year when the weather and track are better. Stickier conditions and a little lighter gas foot will probably help quite a bit. The power is there I just have to get it out.

Saturday Evening will be part III - Road Course time trial @ Blackhawk Farms Raceway.

It definately increased your potential for better 1/4 mile times. I know that I need to put my 17" wheels back on with some DRs. I am trapping 103-104 mph but my 60 ft times are 2.10 or higher everytime. I also need to try the brake fuse deal to see what that does for me since I have an auto.

I'm running 10.5" - 18's with 295's Toyo T1-S's on back. The tires are starting to show wear after 5 track days, a few trips to the drag strip and camber set for the road track. But they still have enough tread for at least 2-3 more track days.

Its hard to say what the potential is, but the 101.90 mph is my highest trap to date and I hit it on a 14.01. That's quite an improvement over my previous efforts. I'm still within 10 or so horsepower of factory levels too. It will come down to launch. I need to get a good day at the track and hit some 1.9* 60 footers to really tell. There is definitely 2 or 3 more miles per hour over stock in there. I looked back through my old slips for 14.01's and found 2 more.

14.01/100.14 (60 - 2.14)
14.01/100.16 (60 - 2.17)

That's 1.75 miles per hour over my previous attempts. The power showed up for the race, but the driver didn't.

Cant wait to see the review after Blackhawk Farms!
I believe this is where the most noticeable difference will be.
Would have loved to see the results with better track conditions.
Now you need the 350EVO trailing arms and rear spherical bearings for a better launch at the strip!
Fight the good fight!

How many shifts in the 1/4 did you have to make?

Thanks BJ. After trapping higher in the 1/4, I'm pretty excited to hit the straightaways on the track. Most people would kill for 2 or 3 more miles per hour on the straights. Track-out mph is going to be fun to see too! Turn 2 at Blackhawk is one where you have to have some ***** to take it WOT, which I usually do. But now I'm not so sure. Oh yeah, how much for all that stuff BJ?

Mpowers - Still in 4th at the end of the 1/4 mile. I should be good to 110 in 4th gear because I have the Technosquare ECU. Even without the ECU, the Z tops out a 104 in 4th with the EVO gear.

what mods do you have on your Z? (besides the 295 toyos, TS ecu, and gearing) what kind of times do you expect to be running w/ a decent 60 ft. time?

p.s. how do you launch in order to hit consistent 1.9/2.0 60ft times?

I have ECU, Y-pipe, crank pulley and k&n filter. Based on my previous best, I expect to hit 13.3/103 with good launch and shifting.

I have two launches, one I hold the rpms at 1400 and ease the clutch out. Sometimes if the track is slippery, I'll leave VDC on for the launch. Which I did several times last night. The best I could pull was the 2.09. Most were 2.1* and some 2.2's. At Byron Dragway, this launch gets me consistently into the 2.0*'s.

The other, I load up the suspension by pressing the brake and gas at the same time (heel-toe style). I bring the rpms up to 2000 and engage the clutch about half way. I hold the car back with the brake. Then let off the brake and clutch and floor it. That usualy gets me into the 1.9*'s or sometimes I bog. If I know I'm going to get a lot of runs, I'll use the second method. If its busy, I'll just use the 1st.

you should give the 1/4mi drag another try on decent conditions. 14.0 with the mods you already have excluding the FD should be normal. You should be hitting at least 13.8 =)

Give it another try brotha!

I'll definitely get out there for another try this year. I generally run 13.9-13.7, with my best being 13.6.

well if your best being a 13.6, is that stock or w/ upgrades? I think with the FD you can do 13.4-5. Getting a 13.3 is very good.

The Tilton is definitely on my list of stuff to get. I think the FD and the Tilton would make a dramatic improvement to acceleration at the real track. But, I'm not sure it would help the 1/4 though. Has anyone done a 1/4 test of the tilton? I would definitely like to try some slicks just for kicks.

Here's the 1/8th info on those runs.

13.94/101.82 60'/2.11 1/8=9.02
13.94/101.87 60'/2.10 1/8=9.03
13.98/101.12 60'/2.09 1/8=9.03
14.00/101.53 60'/2.15 1/8=9.07
14.01/101.90 60'/2.13 1/8=9.09

o-Snap its eric, the 13.6 was run with ecu,y-pipe, pulley, k&n and toyo's. I ran a 13.85 in totally stock trim with stock tires. I took it to the drag strip shortly after I hit 1200 miles.
