Default blue smoke...

When I started my car up this morning blue smoke came from my tailpipes... I let it run for a bit then bliped the throttle the smoke turned to black. I know what these colors denote, but am afraid of the response I may get on the cause and if others have experienced this issue. Other info that may be needed is, I drive 90% highway miles, not aggressive driving, no track events, and the car has 40,000 miles on it.

Blue smoke doesn't mean anything by itself.
What was the outside temp and humidity?
Are you using any fuel additives?
Are you using any oil additive or synthetic oil.

But black smoke is not good. Take your car straight to the dealership on Monday.

BTW ....
When was the last time that you changed your oil and filter?

Put your car back to stock before you take it in to avoid any kind of hassle.

Well.....
At least the plenum.
Depending on the dealership, they may hassle you about it.
The cai is kinda iffy.
Performance Nissan is mod friendly and they will mod your car for you and support any mods, but some dealerships aren't so nice.
Good Luck!

The car runs EXTREMELY rich on start up... this startup is pretty typical.

The problem there is that when he returns it to "stock" form and takes it in, they probably won't find any problem at all. The CAI and Plenum could be the cause of it running out of spec hence the black smoke. He'll get it back from the dealer and put the mods back on and the problem may start all over again.

I've lways heard blue smoke was burning oil, which if it is burning oil then I would think that would mean something. The black smoke after the car warms up does go away. I was more worried of the blue smoke than the black smoke. Running rich is an adjustment that can be made...burning oil on the other hand isn't. The adjustment is new rings or something along those lines...expensive. I haven't had the ECU reset since I have added the CAI or the Plenum and am wondering if that has anyting to do with it.

No, your ECU does not have to be reset.

You're worried for nothing!

btw... where have you been?

Are you for real?

I've never seen smoke on start up from any Zed and i've seen enough now from the 350z cruises to know blue smoke is NOT typical.

From what i know about engines that may be a sign of a head gasket problem. If i were you i would smell the exhaust if your burning antifreeze you can smell it. But if its running fine and only doing it at a start up, i would not worry about it.

Thanks Glen

Don't **** around. Take the car in or you might have to tow it.
The longer you wait the worse it gets.

You should check your oil level as well and keep track of it

Default oil

The oil is checkiong fine, no different on the dipstick. I believe hte burning oil has not evolved into anything major, but I don't want to wait for "major" to greet me going down the interstate at 80mph either. I called the dealership and their response which I figured was "All sports cars do that, it is natural to get some oil in the cylinders after sitting for awhile, it burns up really quick though, don't worry about it..." What a great answer...**** off!
So even if I wanted something done to fix it since it should be covered by my warranty the dealership says there is nothing wrong. So I guess I 'll call NNA and complain, and wait 3-4weeks for them to tell me they have talked to the dealership and decided that nothing is wrong and it is normal...then when the warranty runs out the car starts to burn oil like a 1939 oldsmobile, and I want it fixed and they decided it should be fixed I get to pay the bill. I'm starting to not enjoy this anymore...between tire feathering and TSB's and this...do I dare say those words...

Pheonix...I've been swamped at workl for the past couple of months the weekends are taken up by it as well. I barely remember where the house is...but Oct. 1st-3rd are reserved for the TAIL!!!!! If I don't see you before then, we will have an ultimate journey in Oct.

Sorry about the resonse from your dealership.
You need to find a different place to take your car.
Performance Nissan in Souther Cali, doesn't take lightly to things like that. They probably would have been more proactive than that.
It could be oil going thru your piston rings.
I hope that things work out for you.
Later.
