Default Differential Question

I am trying to locate a used VLSD from a 6m/T with the 3.5 and stub axles and am coming across non locking differentials. Is the VLSD a non locking diff or locking?

Go to www.car-part.com Look under " carrier " . I picked up one complete out of an 04 with 2500 miles for $300 complete ready to drop in.

Yes, this is what I am doing and they are telling me the ones they have are non locking. The question is, is non locking the lsd or the open diff?

The VLSD is viscous so it's not a true locking differential. The g35 sedans, base model coupes and base 350z's have open diffs. If you find any 350Z or g35 coupe that had the Brembo brakes than it has a viscous LSD. Look under Miami parts...they have a BRrmbo g35 coupe carrier for sale. Same as the 350Z.

None of them are selling for less than 600 with the stub axles and final drive. Is it worth it? I figure if i buy the whole thing assembled from here, my investment is 600 plus a few hours labor, but if I buy the nismo diff, I still need to buy the final drive separately which is another 375 plus a lot more labor involved, maybe another 500, so I would be looking at ~$1750 for the nismo compared to about 800 for the oem vlsd. I am not really a track guy, I like to go to the 1/4 mile track once in a while. How much better is the nismo for off the line traction, is it worth it for me, I go to the track three of four times a year??? And I am getting the torque converter modded next week.

OEM or NISMO???

If you remain NA and don't road coarse your car , the VLSD is fine.
Even occassional drags , it's fine.

I would not bother converting to the viscous LSD unless you get the parts given to you from someone. Given the cost involved, and the fact that you are still getting used pieces for that price, get the NISMO or don't bother doing any of it

I have a base and would really like to get the nismo, but the price is a little to steep for me.
