Default Drop resistor for auto tranny

Ok can you use a drop resistor on the 5 speed auto on the z. I know guys on maxima.org have used these to make the tranny shift faster and harder for the 2002-2003, but can we on our Z's.

the stillen VB upgrade will do that for you too

I know but why spend $500 dollars or so if you can spend $5 from radio shack for almsot the same gain. I know the maxima members have taken off .1 or .2 on the quarter with it for their auto.

The drop resistor will cause the tranny to shift faster and harder. I know some guys who had it on maxima.org and gained .1 on the quarter for sure. Im not sure if we can do this on the Z thats why im asking.

This has been discussed before but the resistor is supposedly really tough to get to.

Thanks the only problem is were is the resistor i can not find it. If i knew were it was i would be able to drop it.

hope someone here figures out how to do this mod. i would be very interested in it.

Recently on Maxima.org someone posted about a 'drop resistor mod'. When a sensor is disconnected, it allows the full line pressure in the auto tranny which makes shifts faster and more abrupt. I tried this myself and it makes an enormous difference in shift times. Is it harmful to the transmission? Derek Michaels

Full line pressure will be slightly easier on the transmission because it reduces slippage (typically 2-8% for autos) and shift overlap (being in two gears at once when upshifting) due to stronger application forces being directed via the servos to the bands and clutches. This locks up the bands and clutches harder and gives firmer shifts. By reducing slippage, it also decreases the amount of heat produced by the clutches and bands and locks the clutch in the torque converter up harder in the higher gears to increase fuel economy. The heat produced by slippage contributes to wearing out the seals, bands and clutches in an automatic more quickly. However, since the transmission controller is programmed to give full line pressure at wide open throttle, this mod just gives rough shifts at part throttle. It's similar to using an HKS ALC (Automatic Line Controller) box. Other ideas to improve shifting with an auto tranny could be to shim the PL solenoid regulator springs to increase peak pressure or to shim the shift accumulator springs to firm up and speed up the shifts. Or you can just swap in a manual!
edit: damn, i looked up that hks alc the article mentioned. it is only made for the 300zx. hopefully they will make it soon for the 350z, because it is a simple plug-in module.

Did any one try this drop resistor yet? I want to do this, but im not sure how to. Can someone tell me were abouts the resistor is located on our car? For a few dollars, and a hours time this mod may be well worth it. Im willing to be the guinea pig here. I just need someone to inform me were the resistor is.

i checked out the maxima site and didnt find an answer to whether or not this will work with a f/i system. if it will, what type of f/i? im no expert by any means, but i would think a single turbo would work. how will high hp and tq @ low rpm affect this mod; i.e. tt or sc?

is there another name for the drop resistor? something more technical? maybe it will be in the service manual, but it isnt listed under the drop resistor.

edit: the manual talks about a line pressure solenoid valve and a pressure regulator valve, but it doesnt say where it is.

Hahaha....you guys are funny.

The drop resistor is already on your car UNLESS the 5AT uses a different method to increase line pressure then the previous Nissan 4AT, which is very possible. If the 5AT uses one, you simply wire a RPM switch to the resistor like this:

i'm not sure you read the whole thread. the problem is not that we think it is not already on the car. the problem is that we dont know WHERE on it is on the car.

I think you should call Jason or someone else that may be able to find this information. (where it is located or if we even have one to drop) I remember several months ago someone saying it is next to impossible to find and that the valve body upgrade was just as difficult to perform.

I think this mod could make a difference especially for those with F/I.

I am currently considering the valve body upgrade from Stillen. Let me know if anyone else is interested in a potenial groupbuy.
