how can different head gaskets not effect compression ratio? that doesnt make since, unless they're both the same size and one is just stronger.

alti and 350, same ratio. maxima heads will raise the compression.

Same thickness or more likely the difference is negligible, so CR change is less then a 10th and Nissan still says 10.3:1 on both motors.

Nismo one is 0.7mm thick, anybody know the Z gasket thickness?

the 350z also has variable valve timing

Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS)

Dude....I am laughing....YOU are the one posting inaccurate information!

The FX35 is a rear wheel drive crossover SUV (AWD is an option on the FX35, and standard on the FX45)....not FWD as you posted.

i know, i'm just saying that the 350z has it, since the guy thought the Altima had it and the 350z didn't.

FYI You wil find this general statement to be true.

a) virtually all SUVs with "transverse" mounted engines are Front Wheel drive with rear wheels engaged for AWD (if optioned) operation on demand. For example an Acura MDX, Honda Pilot, etc.

b) virtually all SUVs with "longitudinal" mounted engines are
" Rear" Wheel drive with front wheels engaged for AWD (if optioned) operation on demand. For example an Infintiti FX35, Ford explorer , Chevy Suburban, etc etc.......

Thanks, I'm going to take your word for it. Got a used altima VQ b/c my z motor was shot right after driving it off the lot. Didn't know the differences, so now I'm going to swap heads and internals into the original block.

So this is a great opportunity to tell everyone what you found. I know for certain there were minor differences which accounts for HP variances between VQs, but what I still don't know after hours of searching is if I can use the block only from a maxima, pathfinder, etc., in my 350Z. I don't mind swapping all my internals, heads, harness, and other accessories, I just need to to replace the block. Since this is your last post indicating you purchased an Altima VQ, what did you find out? Did it work? Did you need modified mounts?

Along those same lines, has anyone ever used helicoils to fix a stripped head bolt hole?
