I received a case of Amsoil 5W-30 oil this afternoon. I still have about 300 miles before I am due for an oil change. What kind of oil filter should I use with my new oil? Should I just use a Nissan filter or an Amsoil filter or another brand? Thanks.

Oh yeah. I forget to ask about something else. This oil is recommended to be changed every 25k miles or 1 year. Sounds like a long time to me. How often should I change this oil?

unless you drive on the highway all the time.......every 3,000 miles........25,000 or once a year ????????? motor will not last long that way

25k seems like a long time. That said, there's no reason that a properly filtered synthetic can't go 15k or 6 months without changing it. As long as the filter is changed regularly (say every 5-10k miles) the oil itself only needs to be changed to get the water and acids out of it. Synthetic oils don't have aditives in them that get used up like they do in conventional oil. According to Mobil engineers that I've spoken to, their oil is good to at lest 15k miles as long as the filter is changed every 5-7.5k miles. I've been using the MI-105 filter on my car. Mobil-1 filters have the best filtration of any other brand but they don't flow uite as well as K&N filters.

If you want to go 25K for OCI, I would recommend sending in for some used oil analysis at around 7.5K miles. Amsoil buy their PAO base stock from Exxon-Mobil. Not sure if it is worth the extra dollar per quart over Mobil 1.

a 25000 mile oil change interval is rediculous unless you use a high efficiency bypass filter. Even if you change your full-flow filter often, smaller particles may build up to dangerous levels over such a long change interval.
If you want to keep your powertrain warranty, you'll need to stick with Nissan's recommended 3750-mile change interval. If your engine blows up, and you have not changed your oil for 25K miles, good luck trying to convince Nissan to fix your engine under warranty.
With a good synthetic, you should have no problem going 5K-7.5K. Personally, I never let my car go beyond 3K. I use mobil 1 or German-made Castrol Syntec.
I used to use Mobil 1 M1-110 filters, but finally realized that they were very restrictive when I installed a cheap Purolator paper filter (oil pressure is much higher now). I may try the M1-105 next time, since it has much more filter media and should flow better.
Nissan factory filters are no better than the cheapest paper filters... there's no reason to pay $5-7 for an OEM filter when equivalent aftermarket filters of equal or better quality sell for $3.

It just doesnt seem that big of deal to change your oil every 3,000 miles . Its cheap....even synth. oils . I have a 93 Dodge truck with 86,000 miles on it . It doesnt burn a drop of oil and doesnt leak any either . Ive had its since new . Its cheap insurance and renewing that insurance every 3,000 miles is cheap and worth it . So I just dont understand why some one would want to extend that out ....my .02

Dame people. I am not seriously planning on waiting 25k miles between oil changes. I was just getting info as well as saying that Amsoil says the recommended oil change interval for this oil is 25k miles. So it looks like the general concensus is between 3k and 6 or 7 k miles MAX!!! I guess I am going to probably go with the Mobil 1 M1-105 filter. Where can I get this filter for a cheap price? Thanks

Autozone is one of the few stores that carries Mobil 1 filters. Not many stores carry them, and you don't save any money trying to buy them on the net.
You might also check with EZ Lube, or other quick oil change place that uses Mobil 1 products - they buy them by the case, and may be able to cut you a deal on some. Typically, the filters go for about $12.

Listen, realistically, most people do not keep their vehicles beyond 3-4 years. I highly doubt that a vast majority of Z owners will hold on to their Z's beyond this time period. I am sure you will have some diehard z groupie who will, but most of you will not. The minute some new model, such as a redesigned Supra, STi, Evo, M3, etc. comes out you are going to have 50% of the owners jump ship and go with what's current, trendy and fashionable.

I have owned a 01 IS300 which in the 4 years of ownership have put on 132,000 miles. Used only OEM Toyota filter and 5w30 dino based oil. No mechanical engine related problems. I changed the oil and filter religiously every 5000 miles however. The frequency and consistency of the oil change intervals is what matters.

I also had a '92 Maxima SE, same service interval and I had the vehicle for 6 years and 187,000 miles. No engine issues whatsoever when it was sold.

For your Z you can use whatever oil filter you prefer, however I personally would not pay more than $10 for a filter. In fact, for myself I am going to stick to the OEM Maxima filter, 2 for $10 at Performance Nissan, can't beat that. As for the oil, 6 quarts of Mobil 1 Trisynthetic or SuperSyn as it is called now is only $23 at Costco.

So best case scenario for cost, you are paying $5 for filter and lets say $1.25 for regular dino oil 5 quarts = $6.25, so $11.25 for an oil and filter change. If you use Mobil 1, 5quarts x $4/quart =$20 + $5 for oil filter = $25 total.

I personally do not like to mess with the disposal of oil and dealing with the Rhino ramps at home, etc. So I have my buddy in Fullerton change my oil for me. He has a shop and several lifts so I bring my own oil filter ($5) and my own oil ($20, for synthetic) and pay him $10 for this lift time. Sometime I just buy him lunch or dinner. So total about $35 for an oil change.

If you do an oil change anywhere from 3000-5000 miles your fine. Even if you go to 7500 miles your ok.

Lets say you were to use fully synthetic oil and an oem filter and you were to do your own oil changes for the next 50,000 miles.

And for arguement sake, let say you paid $30 for the filter and oil, then in that 50,000 miles you would have had 10 oil changes performed, or paid approx $300 for oil changes in the course of 50,000 miles.

So don't mess around with this 25,000 mile oil change interval and just follow your owners manual.

I think I have spent $300 on an ipod, xbox and stuff, strip club, craps table at the Bellagio, shoes, coffee table, a chair at Ikea, Vacuum cleaner, Casio titanium watch, DVD recorder, etc. Don't skimp on the oil change. Just my 2 pesos.

M1-108... I thought our cars take M1-105 and it isn't that big, though I could be wrong I just purchased mine. So is anyone actually waiting 15k miles before changing oil I spend 30bucks for mobile one sinthetic and change out every 5k miles I know I am not saving money, but is there an advantage to synthetic vs conventional motor oil?
