Has anyone ever painted a carbon fiber hood. I was thinking of getting a slotted hood and painting it to match my car. My concern is the paint will crack or worse not stick on properly.
cf can be painted by any good body shop, as far as paint matching its easy as long as you use a good bodyshop. they use a paint mixer with a computer attached. they type in the paint code for your car and it tells them how many parts of each paint they need to mix to produce your color. theyll then test on a test sample piece of plastic or something lying around to try to match accounting for fading. so if you go to a bodyshop just ask if they mix their paints on site rather than order their paints. you should have no problems at any good body shop doing a good job. however it is my personal opinion that if you want to paint a hood use fiberglass. the stock hood is a very light aluminum and therefore not too much weight is saved with a cf hood. if you plan on painting for sure just get a fiberglass hood and paint it to match the car. carbon fiber is very fragile and once broken cannot really be fixed easily. you can bondo and reapint but the fiberglass is safest and if your painting you lose the effect of cf. so id say get a fiberglass hood if you wanna paint or get a cf hood if you wanna leave it cf colored. sorry for the long post, just trying to help out. good luck. feel free to contact me through im. good luck.
You can paint over Cabon Fiber hoods. We had a OEm Caf hood candy coatrd and we have seen many CF hoods painted patially and fully on the 350z.
Most JGTC Race cars are fullly constructed of CF as welll as the Ferrarri Enzo. The reason is becasue of its lightness and over all structure is stronger then fiberglass.
Most CF hoods have a fiberglass skeleton on the bottom that is molded with a CF top piece.
Painting Cf is no problem at all. I have most of my CF body kit painted with aprt of it let exposed. The paint sticks the same as fiberglass metal or aluminum.
Below are few examples of carbon Fiber hoods that have been painted.
