Default Shaving (filling) the front Badge.....

Ok, so I have seen this done, and I love the look, yet I hate it. I have never seen it completely smooth and there has always been an outline on ever car I have seen with this done. Now I have a friend that can plastic weld. As in fill the plastic bumper with the same material so that it wont crack and what not. He said that there will always be a slight line there though. Why? I cont seem to grasp why the plastic cant be brought over top and then add some filler to completely get rid of the whole thing. Is there anyway to get this perfect. Anyone have a method for success?

dude have some patience, posting twice in your own thread on the same day... it can be completely smooth. just look at the people who have already shaved their badges... the plastic can be brought over the top and then sanded down to make it flush with the original body lines. Sounds like hes trying to take the easy way out without doing the sanding part, which is the most labor intensive. you could also use some spot putty which should take care of any minor imperfections. Again, sanding will be required to get the best look.

All the ones I've seen were perfectly smooth (no outline) so I guess it depends on the shop that does it & if they sand it out first prior to paint.

Yes its possible people shave plastic stuff all day long with out noticing what was there. I shaved and molded the bumpers on my last car without knowing what I did. A lot of shaving by the way. I use a 3M product called panel bond. Amazing stuff, but very expensive. There are other options out there but I dont know the names off the top of my head. Most people dont have success with plastic welding because it tends to warp the bumper creating more "bondo" work. If you can see what used to be there, then it was a bad job, plain and simple. There are plenty of shops out there that should be able to a good job that will last.
