Default Painting your own parts..

Has anyone ever considered painting their own parts? I'm not, but im interested in hearing the stories/methods of different people. For somethings, it should be very hard, but for others, much simpler. Thanks!

Funny you ask, I just finished prepping, painting and wet sanding my nismo front lip, This is the first time i ever painted anything for a car, i was suprised it was relativly easy and learned alot in the process, plus not only was it cheaper to do then payin a shop, now i have all the cool stuff to paint anything else i want

I just basically got some basecoat and clearcoat and sprayed it on with a paint gun hooked to my compressor, then followed up with some wetsanding with 1500 and 2000 grit paper with compound and polish to give it that mirror finish

It looks absolutly flawless, i'll try to post pics later

I painted my own engine cover, battery and fluid hatch covers. You can order cans of paint from www.towerpaints.com, all you need is the paint code for your car and they can send you an exact match.

If you're going to be painting plastic pieces like the engine cover, then you need to prime it with BullDog Primer. It sticks to plastic then the paint sticks to it.

Preping and painting was fairly easy. You just need acetone to clean the pieces, fine sandpapers to sand the primed and painted parts. You can buy spray cans of clearcoat to finish them off.

What brand of primer, basecoat, and clearcoat did you use? Did the paint match?

I actually went to a local Sherwin williams automotive paint warehouse, i got their ultra 7000 paint system, which was the plastic anti-static cleaner, primer with adhesion promoter, then the basecoat with a little bit of flex agent in it, and the clear with flex agent in it, the paint match is absolutly PERFECT, after doin a little wet sanding, the part looks like a mirror, gotta love fresh paint

Overall I am very very satisfied with the paint, and the people at sherwin were extremely helpful, i liked the fact that they were local so if i had any problems they could help me with them instead of having to call someone and send pictures etc., i found them through there site http://www.sherwin-automotive.com they have locations all over

Silverstone is difficult to match. I'd love to see some pictures.
