you should always use high-temperature paint for the headlights.
when I did my previous car's headlights, I used HOT PAINT spray can, it was something like 500F degrees or something like that. Never had any problems.
I'm going to say it was the fumes of the paint that stained your lens.
I think the best would be to sand it down with high-grit sandpaper, then use some plastic polish.
