Smile Facts on Dry Carbon fiber VS. Wet Carbon

Many people do not realize what the difference between wet carbon fiber and dry carbon fiber, and sometimes the carbon fiber product they are purchasing is not entirely carbon fiber. People always judge the product just by the price, they do not understand the equipment, raw material and making mold are all different.

Dry carbon fiber is made in a pre-preg and dry process which consists of vacuum forming sheet of carbon fiber into a mold at temperatures around 350¢K, this process allows carbon fiber to form into a strong and lightweight composite.

On the other hand, wet carbon fiber is formed by using hand laid carbon fiber sheets into a mold then mixed with resin (30% carbon fiber, 70%resin). This process may allow air pockets form inside, then makes the wet carbon fiber structure weak and also is susceptible to changes in temperature.

We can usually notice the difference between them by looking at the surface of the material. Dry carbon fiber surfaces are smooth and show no air bubble pockets. In contrast, wet carbon fiber is wavy and air bubble pockets are noticeable. Because of the molding process, dry carbon fiber cost more to produce than wet carbon fiber.

We are always in search for better way to make high quality products for 350Z community. Our dry carbon fiber instrument crown cover is our first step in dry carbon fiber. Hope to get more support on high quality items.
Thanks!

Question

Jay,

Is that a picture of a Dry Carbon piece..?

Can you do a complete replacement of the Gauge, Dash and center console? I am looking to replace all of that plastic (centre console, drivers gauge pod and from the shifter back) in my 04 silver ZR with CF. I have not found any true CF replacements and have therefore been reduced to considering the 'CF Print' by Suite-E-Grafx....

Regards,

you can make wet carbon lay just as strong as dry carbon, give you have the necessary Vaccuum bag techniques and do a cross hatch laying process.

i'd say 95% of the CF products out there are just wet lay in the mold and that's it. which totally sucks.

pre-preg is nice, but awfully expensive. imho. you make a hood with two layer wet lay with a vacuum bag and a honey comb support, you'll get my business. for now i'll have to settle for whatever is out there...
