Safe way to remove OEM shift knob???

Default Safe way to remove OEM shift ****???

I've read many threads about aftermarket shift **** installation, and they all say something slightly different. I want to know the best and safest way to remove the OEM shifter without running the risk of damaging my transmission. Does anyone know the best way to do this? Help me out!!!

there are all kinds of suggestions, but let me tell you how the dealership does it properly... they use a strap wrench under the main ball up top on the square neck..

MOST IMPORTANT THEY SECURE THE MAIN ROD below the cover with a vice covered in a shop towel.

Turn, lefty loosey.... DO NOT ALLOW THAT ROD TO TURN!

I kinda f$%#ed up the tranny or clutch plates or something a little on my truck by trying to force my aftermarket **** off without securing the shift lever. I used epoxy resin to secure the custom **** because it kept comming loose and I have used resin before in the past on another shift *****. It's not bad as long as you never EVER need to remove the ****.

Well the cheap leather wore off after a few months and had to TRY to remove it. I thought if I turned hard enough and smacked it around a bit that I could break it loose but it never occured to me that maybe I should support the shifter

In the morning the tranny, actually the clutch, made this noise that sounded similar to a power steering pump going bad. It took me a few days to realize what caused that noise. Unless it was just a coincidense.

The only way I will be able to remove it now is with a cutting torch so as to heat it up hot enough to melt the plastic bushings in the ****.

The noise went away for a few months but has come back. It only does it for the first 2-3 times I depress the clutch when it's cold.

Anyway bad things will happen if you bend it. Totally learned my lesson on that one. Weird thing is I had another older Nissan truck and tried the same way to remove a **** on that truck and tried with even more force and nothing ever happend to it.

It worked like a charm. Just so you know though, you will have to apply a good amount of pressure to get the stock one off. This link assures that you don't bend or break anything though.

ive always wondered what would the damage actually be if it did turn to much. anyone know exactly what would happen? i mean would it immediatly ruin the tranny or what?

Bad voodoo twisting that rod... thats just a no no
