Question Rear Hatch Damper/Stays

Is anyone (besides me) running a rear wing having problems with the hatch staying up? I'm running the NISMO rear wing and can't seem to keep the frickin hatch open for more than a few seconds. I've clowned byself a few too many times. I'll be adjusting my subwoofer box or even taking things in and out of the trunk area when all of a sudden "KADUNK" the rear hatch drops and slams me on top of the head. It's quite embarrassing and kinda difficult lifting things with one hand while holding the hatch up with the other hand. Anbody got a recommended solution to my delima, or am I stuck with the stock stay/arms? Getting a concusion and need help

Yeah its a common problem and sadly the only real solution is to give in and buy nissan's rip-off nismo shocks. In their intelligence apparently they didnt anticipate that their own product would cause this problem. People will say that removing the weight in the hatch will help but after removing both the weight and wiper the trunk still has tendencies to fall.

I remember some guy had this problem, so he removed his wiper and wiper motor and it solved the problem. Might wanna give it a try.

At this point I'm willing to try almost anything short of removing the wing or the rear windshield Where are these weights I'm hearing about?

my dealer replaced mine under warranty (no spoiler) since it was falling down in the cold even without a spoiler,

now it's hard to close without putting weight on it, I'm sure it would support a spoiler without giving in...

Bottom line, you need to replace the stays...

Already tried going through a dealer they dont give a damn. As far as the weight some Z's have em some dont. No idea why. Basically remove the plastic covered under your hatch that lines around the window and covers the windshield wiper motor. Right in the dead center you will either see the weight or a gap where it would have been. Nevertheless this may not solve your problem. It's just stupid engineering on their part.

Thanks Ice, I'll have a look to see if my Z is one of the fortunate (or unfortunate) ones that has weights inside the lift hatch. I agree you would think Nissan would have stronger shocks available for those of us that opted to purchase their heavy-**** wing

hi guys,

in approx. 4 weeks we have stronger rear hatch dampers. i have already installed the prototype. so i had the same problem with my strosek rear wing. now the hood goes automatic up afer you have lift the hood approx. 40cm. and they stay up! also by low tempratures that we have now in germany.

it will be a complete replacement kit with brackets. its not possible to remove the original brackets from the damper, so we make new brackets (black anodized).

tino

ps: at the moment we have finished the engine hood dampers.

That's great news! Any idea how much ($US) we're talkin for a set of rear hatch dampers?

We should start an exchange program for parts like this... Someone under warranty, no wing, with struts that work should trade for the busted ones, and then get them replaced under warranty.

pricing is like the hood dampers. 137,89 euro -10% forum discount = 124,10 euro * 1,2 = approx. US$ 148,92 incl. all brackets.

15 sets or more = 20% = approx. US$ 132,37

According to Nissan, when installing the rear deck spoiler, new "upgraded" hatch shocks are to be purchased and installed. A total waste of money. I went this route and $340.00 later, still had a problem. I took the weight out of the hatch and voila! problem solved for almost a year now. I wish I had taken it out before I spent the extra cash!!!

Tino
We have a problem on the UK cars as well. Are you able to supply to us here.
We supply and fit a lot of spoilers and kits and it would be good to be able to offer this option.

I had no weight to begin with and im about to take off the wiper assembly so after that there is no excuse at all for it still not being able to support the weight. Seems some people were just luckier than others. Or maybe your 05 has better struts then my 04

seriously, carefully take the hatch plastic cover off, and remove the weight with 4 10mm bolts. it only weighs about a pound but it solved my hatch problems. with my hatch i had to hold down the trunk pop button twice everytime. then i removed the wiper and it popped up even better.
