Default 350Z with sunroof

Just saw a Z with a custom sunroof installed. Couldn't get beside the guy to find out how much he had paid but it looked good.

Webasto is making one for the 350z. While at my dealer last week I saw a brochure for it--the service department was debating whether or not to start installing them or not. No word on price. Here's a link:

Almost all aftermarket sunroofs leak eventually. Most sooner than later! Mugen please tell me that you didn't really mean that dealer is putting them in ALL their Z's, if so they should be promptly b!tch-slapped! I would go Jackie Chan on my dealer if they drilled holes in my bumper, but cutting a hole in the roof.......not unless they want that sawzall shoved where the sun don't shine.

Cut a hole in your roof - have some sun overhead - hurt your stability and ridge frame... kiss it bye bye.

If you want a sunroof buy a convertible and save yourself the hassle of hurting your poor Z's performance.

Convertible has NO roof and it weighs more then a standard Z.

Thats the main reason why I didn't buy the car that day because the Performance and the Track model they had at the dealership all had aftermarket sunroofs and there was one in the bay getting one installed .. Well anyone in so cali that knows a good dealer that doesn't have a markup or any stupid added options to jack up the price, then please let me know.

I've have been installing roofs in cars for the past 15 years and had very rarly had one that leaked. And the ones that did were the cheap-o models that people wanted but we didnt recommend. Today good sunroofs leak as about as much as your windsheild, which is almost nill, and most are designed with drainage tubes to evacuate the water away safley if any happens to seep in. I've thought about doing on on mine but because they are so small because of the roof I'm still up in the air of wether it is worth the effort and I'm also not a fan of the roof opening on the outside, but we'll see.

Why would you want to add all that wieght to the Z?? It weighs enough already.....Reminds me of the guys with lots of performance mods along with a few hundred lbs of sound system cancelling it out

Adding the sunroof won't hurt the stability of the car at all b/c none of the structural supports are in the roof, if that were the case they would've never been able to develop the conv. without first detuning the engine. Hence, in the Z32 the conv. was not TT (only available as a t-top)

If anyone has PICs please post! The ones that were already installed, did the sun roof sit flush along with the molding around it on the body (or should I say--does it look factory?) or does it stick up and look like it was aftermarket?

I saw him at about 3PM Monday going South on Barranca St. in Covina/West Covina. If you're on these forum please tell us about it.

The weird thing was that the hatch which was open was sort of hanging over the rear windshield since the roof has such a slope. That's the only thing that I didn't like about it.

NissaNZ: I'm not the one you saw but I do have the Webasto sunroof installed on my Z and since you're in L.A., you can check it out if you like. PM me. Thanks.

RandyZ: The sunroof looks factory. Flush fit inside and out. European made

Who did the install and what was the price (if you don't mind)? I'm in Fresno and this likes something I'd like to do, just unsure of installers around here. Please add pics if you have. Thanks

I used to work for a shop that had installed sunroofs in the past. They stopped installing them because they all came back with leaks. Not only that I have personally uninstalled and reinstalled, and redone all the rubber seals in more than one FACTORY sunroof on EXPENSIVE cars. The owner of the shop was militaristic with his quality, and would never recomend installing any cheaply made product to a customer. Based on that experience as well as seeing leaky sunroofs and t-tops on numerous cars, I would never ever do that to my car. I wouldn't recomend that anyone else do it either, reguardless of whether a shop claims that theirs don't leak. Though most if not all aftermarket sunroofs will eventually leak, I bet almost all shops that install them will tell you that *theirs don't leak*! Yeah, well my $#!+ don't stink either! Whatever.

It was installed by an authorized Webasto dealer down here in SoCal but check Webasto's website, (http://www.webasto-us.com/home/en/homepage.html), I think it lists authorized installers around the U.S. Price from what I gather is about $900 installed.

The car that I bought had this option w/c was tagged at $3,600 by the stupid dealership, tinted windows, and a supplementary alarm system. I just paid an extra $400 on top of the car's MSRP for all three added options (long story...) I'll try and post pics of the car as soon as I finish insatalling my Tein coilovers and Nismo sways, hopefully this weekend. LMK how it turns out. Thanks.

What IS the story on structural rigidity? A lot of people throw around the rigidity factor, but I'm not sure what supports really exist. I do know that I saw a picture of a rollover 350z, and its roof was semi-caved in on the passenger side. I don't know the details of the crash, but it did raise my eyebrows. Has anyone looked at roll cage/roll bar options? If I were to put in an aftermarket sunroof, I'd probably think about putting in some sort of support, just because it seems like this car isn't all that strong in a rollover even in hardtop form.

Just curious if any engineers on the forum have a take on rigidity.

Take care.

Hey blaque,

are you in orange county..would love to see pics of the sunroof..do you know which authorised dealer actually did the install..and is it power or manual opening?
Let us know how the coilover installs go and how they affect the ride or choppiness.

thanks

Steve/Shagz:

I'm in L.A. Sunroof is powered w/ 2 pre-sets & soft touch close. Sunroof model is Stratos 300 Med (for medium size I guess). Coilovers/sways go in this Friday. Pics probably by the weekend.
Hope to join the Latigo run if I can get the car aligned before Sun.

The sunroof install was done at:
WEBASTO PRODUCT
9740 Alburtis Ave
Santa Fe Springs, CA 90670
Ph: 562-222-1077

Thanks.
