the LAW
Here in New York State, the Motor Vehicle and Traffic Law states that all cars must display an officiall state issued license plate on the FRONT and REAR of the vehicle, no higher than 60 inches and no lower than 12 inches from the ground. It must me securely mounted as to not sway or come loose. Also, it may not be covered with any type of covering (plastic) and the rear must be illuminated at night with two clear lights. Colored illumination is not allowed.
Citations can be issued for PARKED cars without a front plate. Fines are up to $200.
I would think that laws in other states regarding front plates are similar.
By the way.....the old excuse of "It fell off in an accident and I haven't fixed it yet...HERE it is (and pulling it off the floor, or setting it on the dash) won't work. How many times do you think the officer has heard THAT one!
