If you have acsess to a dremal that works better.

 

+1 on the dremel.

 

It's really not that bad of an install. The idea of cutting a hole in your bumper is a little scary at first, but if you take your time you will be fine. A dremel works nice. If you don't have you can actually just use a sharp pocket knife.

 

Or you could use it as an excuse to go buy a dremel if you don't already have one

 

If you go with the exacto knife, heat it up in between cuts, a simple lighter works. It makes it go much easier.

 

A sharp utility knife works like a charm. It really is a simple DIY install.

 

just make sure u sketch where ur cutting first...

 

Yeah, get the template lined up just right, then use a dry erase marker to outline the hole to be cut. Then it's an easy cut. Once the bumper hole is cut, you'll need to dig out a little of the foam bumper support behind it so the duct will fit in nice and flush, then just use self tapping screws or rivets to attach it.

 

Is this the unit to buy, or is there a better one on the market?

 

Ebay ones are ok for the price, but they won't be perfect. Evo-R makes a nice one, and then there's of course the authentic Varis duct, which all others copied.

I was wondering also what kind of screws wont have a rust problem..and is it neccesary to use a bolt? Self tap good enough?

 

Most of them come with self tapping screws. Rivets are better for security purposes, but if you're going to use screws and it doesn't come with them, just get brass screws and paint the heads black.

 

you do have to take the front bumper off to install this. i was looking at these as well.

 

why would you need to take the bumper off...I took a look today and it doesnt seem to get in the way of anything

 

I wondered about that too.

I recently got the Evo-R duct but it's been too cold to put it on so I've just been planning the install. When I got the duct I assumed I'd have to take my bumper off (like I did when I put on smoked side markers), but when I looked at where the duct was supposed to go (based on the template) it seemed like I could just cut the bumper in place.

Is this true?

 

hmmm......made me think of how it would look on the new '07 to have two of them b/c of the dual intakes......

You do not have to remove the bumper.

The duct is angled, so provided the pass side intake has a fresh air pass-through in the radiator core support like the dr. side, they would have to make a reverse angled duct to be compatible with that side of the car.
