Default Air Conditioning Controls Always On??

I have a touring model and it seems like everytime I start the car, the air conditioning light is on. Also, If I use the defroster setting (not the defroster/feet choice, just the defroster only setting) of the heater, the air conditioner comes on. I have to keep turning it off. It's annoying as hell because it keeps trying to out-think me just like the audio pilot. Does anyone else's car do this?? The owner's manual didn't seem to discuss this.

Thanks. Andy

yeah, mine's always on. it seems the only time it can be off is if you are using outside air, and at certine temperatures. kinda weird.. not diggin it too much, but whatever.

AC doesnt mean cold, its a air conditioner, it cools the air to below the dewpoint, dehumidifying it basicly, then heating it back up.

otherwise youd get hot humid air blowing at you, and it would do you zippo good as a defroster.

basicly, AC is sposed to be on when running heat or defroster.

A lot of cars with automatic climate control work this way. For instance, my GTP AC is on until it falls below 42 degrees. As has been said above, it keeps the air dryer.

I get the concept of less humid air, but in cases where you don't need less humid air, then you are just running the air at the expense of the motor (and mileage). Ah, maybe I'm just not worthy of such refinement!!

You could turn it off like I do, and it doesn't seem to do any harm even when I don't remember to. I was just a little worried that this was going to be another audio pilot situation where nissan went for bells and whistles but ended up make things worse in the process.

Thanks for the feedback though. I never considered that this function might be due to the auto climate control.

I am so confused. It works flawlessly. If you want to turn off the AC, push the button in. If you want to turn it off, set it to off! If you don't like the speed take it off auto!

What is the big problem? It's the best AC system I've ever used, set and forget, ultra easy.

You are exactly wrong! You absolutely cannot set and forget because the system keeps making the decisions for you. That is, it always turn the air on. I DO turn it off, and the car turns it back on when you start it or use the defroster. This has nothing to do with the auto setting on the fan control.

And I'm not saying it is such a big deal. Just trying to figure it out.

Uh, mine works as Rob states. I keep my A/C off unless I need it and then I push it on.

The A/C button pushes in. Are you aware of this? Also, is your fan set to Auto? Mine is not. I usually set it pretty low.

If i remember right, the manual (which I don't feel like going outside to get) says that the a/c should generally be on, unless you want to run heat only, in which case you push the button and it goes off. Nissan apparently believes that most people will use the auto temp control (in the touring) and that requires that everything be set to "auto", and temperature be selected, and the a/c be on. As the winter here in NY is not going to end this year, I keep having to turn the a/c off by pushing in the button. I'm looking forward to keeping it on!

It's not a great mystery -- doesn't anyone read the manual?

As in most climate control systems, the AC will stay on to allow the car to dehumidify the air and maintain the correct temperature. This is normal.

If you want to control things manually, you can turn the fan speed off of AUTO and select a speed yourself. In that mode, if you turn the AC off it will stay off (remembering its state the next time you start the car). In other words, AUTO is automatic, manual lets you control it yourself.

It is a good system. It works. It is consistent with the way almost all other modern climate-controlled cars work. It operation is well-defined in the owners manual.

I cannot believe the bitching about things that are normal and correct. There are enough REAL problems to complain about instead of inventing fictional ones!

agreed, ever try to figure out how to use a climate control in a high end MB?

After having so much experience with those, I was NOT looking forward to a climate control system, yet this one works as a simple manual OR climate control system.

Keep in mind, you should always run the A/C for 10 to 15 minutes once a week. This includes in the winter. In the winter of course you turn it to heat not cool. You should do this with every car you own that has A/C. This keeps the bearings properly lubricated. 70% of all A/C failures are due to lack of lubrication of the bearings. Doing this religiously will dramatically increase the life expectancy of your A/C.

wow this is an old thread but my problem is that the actual AC button does not do anything at all. The light is always on, no matter if it is on the manual setting, sucking air from the outside or the inside. I have tried holding the button in, and just tapping it but no matter what i do that button seems to have no effect at all. Any idea what this could be? My dealer told me it was normal but can't believe those people half the time. Let me know what you think...

Seems easy, right. What we're saying is when you turn the a/c off, after a few minutes it comes back on by itself. Understand? Even in manual mode
