I have seen many cars with carpets over their dashboard. Is there a reason why they do this? Maybe to keep the sun out so the inside of the car wouldn't be so hot or is it just a style?

I agree with using the sunshade however. You could also have a CLEAR non-tint film applied to your windshield to block some of the harmful UV rays that cause dash damage. Even though I specify non-tinted film, it is still illegal to put ANY film on your car....no one will notice clear film though.

I have heard stuff like this before, I usually use meguiars vinyl protectant but I have no idea if its a silicon based protectant, What brands are non-silicant and where can you get them locally.
A lot of people swear by 303 Aerospace protectant, and say it can be found in many autoparts stores. I couldn't find any, so I bought some non-shiny vinyl conditioner made by Blue Magic at a local Pep Boys. To clean, I just used a rag and some warm water with a drop of soap. Simply washing with some soapy water gave better results than any vinyl cleaner I've ever used.
