Honestly in my history of cars, ive never seen on good template. (Just recenty, the template for the varis intake duct)
I worked at Acura for a while before I got into school, and the templates were off for everything like spoiler holes, side mouldings, etc.
Every install I did I pretty much threw out the template. Always got better results measuring.

i've heard that in order to take off the existing 350Z emblem you use floss and work it behind the emblem. I am sure some residue is going to be left behind though. Whats the best thing to use to remove this residue?

Moderate pre-heating with a heatgun/hairdryer,
then, fingers and your patience.

Where I live all you need to do is leave the car in the afternoon sun for 10 minutes to heat it up. Actually you can leave it in the shade to heat it up. It's going to be 111 degrees today.

Here's what you do . . .
I'm assuming that the letters are all individual, right?
1) Take them off the car
2) take the old 3M adhesive off, and put new on, but keep the protective backing on it for now so that they don't stick to anything
3) get a ruler
4) Line up all the letters correctly against the ruler, using it to check the spacing between letters
5) Once it looks right, get a strip of masking tape, Put it across all the letters to hold them in place in respect to each other. Do a whole bunch of strips, but make sure you can see the bottom 1/4 inch of the letters
6) Get 1" wide masking tape - run it along the bottom edge of the hatch. This is now your guide
7) take the protection off the 3M adhesive, line those letters along the bottom of that masking tape. Press, remove all masking tape . . . now it should be all aligned.
