Default Help... I lost my key

okay.. i lost my key and just now i went to the nearest nissan dealer and asked for a key and a remote. it costs me $189. and they said to reprogram it will cost me another $95. i saw a thread to reprogram a key, but i am worried if the old key is found by someone, he can still open it. should i go to nissan dealer and pay $95, because the dealer said if they reprogram it, the old lost key won't be able to start the car. so what should i do?

When they program the key, they have to have any keys with them that you want to use with the car. If they don't have that lost key when they program the new one, the old key will be erased from the system. It will still open the locks, but it won't start the car.

Confusus say If you loose the key to the Z it will cost your Azz. Wow 189 bucks to replace it and 95 to program what a racket.

the remote will not unlock the car if you program the new one, but when you program the new one make sure you have all of they key fob things that you want to use b/c they have to be done at the same time. If you only program one, then the other one wont work. Just follow the instructions in the "how to" guide on here.

...but what are the odds of whoever finds it knowing exactly which car it goes to?

you think that's bad...for my explorer, i had to pay $300 for a new key, b/c it has some kind of microchip in it...and that didnt include a new remote b/c mine was dead... & not to mention the tow bill to have it towed to the dealership....ridiculous.

And to think, I payed a buck to have a house key made. Wonder if they'll ever make keyless entry to a house?

i had the exact same problem. My body shop lost my keys...and i wasn't taking any chances. If you want the lost key to not work anymore, you need to change out your locks. It cost me $680 for the parts and about $600 for the install (in canadian dollars).

Seeing as how my bodyshop was in slightly run down part of the town, and my body shop guy is sharing the place with another shop, i could trust my dude but i couldn't trust the other people there. Either way, my body shop guy paid for the repairs anyways.

if you lost your keys on your own, I would suggest the less painful/costly route and just get a new key (if you need it), and reprogram your remote/keys.

I am about to go and get a spare key, I only have one right now.
They said it will be $95 for the key itself.
Then I am going to buy a remote key fob online and program that myself.

I bought a replacement Key & Fob on EBAY for a total of $60.00 , when I had the car in for service they reprogrammed and cut the Key ... both work fine
Here is the link for the remote http://stores.ebay.com/Car-and-Truck-Remotes
On the Key Blanks just do a word search on e-bay several keys come up.

^^ Thank you. Bought a used 350z, only came with 1 key and no remotes. Been dreading the expense that I just read in this thread. Will buy those remotes for sure!

Hey, what year is your car?
I have an 06 and I just went to the dealer today they said it would be 100 for the key and 104 to program, clearly trying to rip me off!
I am not sure if there are any year difference on those blank keys.
Thanks

Mine is a 03 and I know there is no difference as the remotes& keys will work from 03-07.I had mine cut at the dealer and they programmed it . Make sure you have all your keys with you. Here is the link for the Key and don't let the Dealers tell you the Key will not work... they will

Thanks man, I just bought a pair of keys from the same seller.
When I was at the dealer they were trying to convince me that the stuff from online stores won't work, so I would buy it from them...

How much did they charge you to program it? Where I went they said 104 to program, as many keys as I want.
