Lambo style doors on my car
As a favor, I'm letting a body shop that does the lambo style door mods test fit my car. It is a bolt on mod and since they get to design it using my car, they're gonna give me a huge discount. Their web site is www.carxs.com. Hopefully I will have a picture of it installed tomorrow evening. If all goes well, they will probably have prices in the next week or two. I can't wait to see what it looks like.
i have had good and bad about those types of doors. But all i have to say, is im sure they look sicccccck! Its a very cool mod, but i can't imagine waisting so much money on somethin like that, dont get me wrong im sure it will be cool as hell. For like $300 id do it, but im sure parts alone cost more than that..... Anyway, cant wait to see the pics, sounds very cool!
hey. wow
thats pretty interesting.. hopefully they have a power hydralic assist of some type in helping you get that door open..
i would hate it if the wind or something hit it and it came slamming down on your leg.
ouch.

this is the scissor style right? where its hinged at the front and opens up, typicly it moves out, and then up.
some label this rice, tho I dont follow that, besides it looking cool, it seems very functional, particularly with our very long doors, I can rarely open them more than 1 notch, which makes getting in and out a PITA. but lambo style, all the way up, hop out, if we all had them, no more door dings.

Ares:
have you ever seen this type in person?
i would like to know exactly what this scissor hinge, you're talking about.. is it like an accordian lever that just extends out to lock the door in the upright position? is there a counter weight to keep the door at half open or something?
mechanically, this shouldnt be TOO hard to do... but ive never seen any images upclose..

I was thinking about this conversion but was wondering how will they get around the window slide thing.
Very cool and pretty pratical IMHO for large doors like ours.
I havent seen em up close, but Ive read many a post about them on another forum, and seen a few pictures. that was how theirs worked, but surely there are other ways.
his just popped out slightly, basicly to clear the window, then it lifted up, much in the same fashion as our hatch moves up using the hydrolic arms to support it and aid in the lifting. properly weighted, the door could be stopped at any point in between, just as ours.
down sides that Ive heard, is that alignment is not always 100%, and you lose a certain amount of safety since they hinges on the front of the door have to be removed, and replaced with the new hinges.
also of course, if the hyrdolick arms ever went bad for any reason... the doors heavy. but thats a long shot.

There are folks here in ATL with that done. Up close I had a chance to look at a 3000gt with that kit. IT was VERY simple. Just one hydraulic piston (about 18bux) and a plate that bolts to the existing mounts. DIdnt seem too hard at all.....and worked fairly well!
Hmmmm (got me thinking).

I thought this modification is a lot of money? Considering when you open the door, it first has to pop out, so it can slide. Secondly, my other concern is how will this effect the rigidness/strength of the Z's frame?
I'm guessing from talking to the guy designing it that it's going to sale for around $1900.00 for the kit. If you look at the website that I posted above, www.carxs.com the prices for the kits they already have are around 1500.00 to 2000.00.
The owner of the shop assured me that it will not affect the car adversly in any way.
Also, the "hinge" comes with a warranty.
I'll be sure to take plenty of pics tomorrow.

Ive heard of kits going for as little as 8-900$, but then labor, I dont know that their prices include labor.
but anyway, take pics, 1500-2000 is alot more, but something like this sounds like it could be done well, or NOT. and quality would be very important.
as for your idea wadd, Id be careful, opening yourself up to possible lawsuits if the door was to fall and hurt someone, or if it caved in an accident due to your design. maybe you can put a HUGE disclaimer on it.
Id also imagine it would have to be more detailed than that, as the window would be in the way for it to move straight up, in some cars, this might not be a problem, but in ours, it would.

What carxs.com does is order the "hinge" from decah and modify it for different cars. They've done it for celicas, mustangs, now they're working on 350z.
The guy that looked at my car said it should be no problem for our cars. He can even hook it up where the remote opens the door.
He showed me some pics of cars they've done, where they shaved the door handles and you used your remote to open the door. I myself like the door handle on the car, but I've read many posts where people don't.

Yea, I say that looks cool too...I'll be interested in something like that too if someone got it to work with NO side effect. I thought the vent on the inside of the 350z will be too thick to clear the fender on one of those kit...but if it works, I think it is surely worth the money for a ONE OF A KIND show car.
Ok, here's the deal guys. I know I promised pics, but I couldn't get any
The guy worked on the car all day modifying the "hinge", and due to time constraints he couldn't get the door on and the car back together.
The time constaint was due to the fact that this kit was being made for someone else who is paying a premium to have it ASAP for a car show and it had to be shipped out tonight.
The good news is it worked and when they get more "hinges" (probably at the end of this week) I'm supposed to schedule an appointment to get it officialy done to my car.
Anyways, It's not what I promised, but I did get a couple of pics of a new Mustang he just did (supposedly the only one in the US), a pic of the hinge on the stang, and a couple of pics of my car with the door and fender off.
